Due to delays and technical issues, Windows 10 can be updated again.

Almost a month after the initial launch announcement, Microsoft was able to download Windows 10 from October 2018 again – this update was canceled almost immediately after the first distribution attempt, as there was an error that some users lost their data.

Usually, functional updates of Windows are distributed in stages, automatically offering new downloads for certain periods of time, which will be no exception for this period. First, the proposal to install a new version of the system will receive two groups of people: those who manually search for updates and those who use the special media creation tool to implement the new system. If these users do not find any new bugs, Windows 10 will be available to other users in the coming weeks.

Interestingly, Microsoft's first unsuccessful attempt to upgrade systems is officially considered inadequate, and the release date of the new version is November 13. This is important for the "windows support" operating system. The same day support period began with Windows Server 2019 and Windows Server 1809.

Due to the unpleasant fact that some enthusiastic users have made the Windows 10 update available, Microsoft will strengthen the software testing and development processes. A data loss error occurred prior to the release of the official update also by a Windows Insider user, but for an unknown reason, Microsoft did not consider these serious complaints: Microsoft's response was limited to a new feature – pre-launch had the opportunity to detect every detected error marked by their level of importance. For example, an error that results in data loss is undoubtedly more important than some kind of ugly-looking or improperly aligned text. However, it is still hard to say how the rating will increase the quality and effectiveness of bug reporting.

What will Microsoft change?

For a slightly longer operating period, Microsoft has promised more openness to the launch of the Windows 10 development and testing process, and in the coming months, you can learn more about how operating system manufacturers change their attitudes and processes. The quality of Microsoft software is already being evaluated at several different levels and in several different dimensions. For example, when users started complaining after the operating system update was released, an "initial quality error" is logged regarding the stability and reliability of the new functional update. Detecting this kind of error means that experienced testers of the operating system have done something wrong. On Tuesday, cyber security enhancement updates were launched and issues related to "long-term quality" – the reliability and efficiency of more weekly updates.

Although Microsoft explicitly acknowledges the problem with the most recent update, the company officially evaluates the operating system path. Company executives rely heavily on certain metrics used to assess operating system satisfaction. The first is the "frequency of incidents" or the number of complaints received from users after each system update. Throughout the useful life of Windows 10, this indicator has steadily declined. That means Microsoft is doing well. However, the incidents can be misleading. The Windows 10 error with a large number of users is a cosmetic error that receives more messages than a more serious incident – such as data loss – that only a small number of users are experiencing, although the latter type of incident is, without doubt, more importantly.

Another indicator is the "net promoter score," or an estimate of how users would be willing to recommend each version of Windows 10 to their friends and family. Company representatives believe that this indicator is also increasing, and the spring version of Windows 10 received the best estimate of all time. However, this indicator may also not show serious problems encountered by a small number of users.

The Windows user base is huge and complex – 700 million. consumers, 35 mln. gadgets 175 mln. different versions, 16 million unique drivers and combinations of hardware – so the likelihood of a specific problem specific to a specific configuration occurring in one or the other is enormous. The loss of data was related to only one of the following configurations: it did not affect Windows users who used the default configuration, but it harmed those who chose certain atypical configurations.
