"President Michel Aoun, President of the Lebanese Parliament Nabih Berri and Prime Minister Saad Hariri welcomed the Russian initiative to return Syrian displaced people," said Russian Ambassador to Lebanon Alexander Zasbekin. "This is the essence of the Lebanese position and they consider participating in the Astana process."
"President Aoun and Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil insist on developing dialogue with the Syrian side," Zasbekin said in a televised interview, adding that "Lebanon is under the burden of the displaced and insists on its return." "The Geneva process was comprehensive under the auspices of the United Nations and some important decisions were taken," he said. "The Astana lane proved to be more effective than Geneva."
On the other hand, he explained that "after the failure of the Russian-American agreement in Aleppo, we met the director in cooperation with Turkey and Iran and we arrived at the path of Astana and that way is very important."
