At the Ventspils Outpatient Clinic, patients will be admitted once a month by Aigars Martinsons, a proctologist at the Laser Medicine Clinic. The first adoption is scheduled for April 12. To register for an appointment at the Ventspils Polyclinic, you must contact the Laser Medicine Clinic.
Proctology is a medical field that studies diseases of the rectum and other parts of the colon. According to surgeon and proctologist A. Martinson, head of the proctology department at the Laser Medicine Clinic, such an expert is one of the doctors who must receive special attention from the patient. The most common problem faced by the patient in this area is hemorrhoidal disease, which, according to statistics, is for every second European citizen. However, the competence of the proctologist is not limited to this. "In Latvia, a proctologist is a surgeon who deals primarily with rectal diseases," says Martinsons. "People often have the impression that the surgeon is certainly operating all patients. There are times when you need to, but we also use many other treatments. The main problem is to go to the proctologist, after which the dialogue continues, "says the proctologist.
A. Martinsons graduated from the University of Riga Stradins and obtained a doctorate in medicine. The doctor's specialization is the diagnosis of colon and rectum diseases, medical and surgical treatment, application of non-invasive methods for hemorrhoidal disease and rupture of the anal mucosa and other proctological diseases. He started laser surgery with hemorrhoids for the first time in Eastern Europe in 2009.

Here is a short interview with Proctologist A. Martinson:
Should a visit to a proctologist be specially prepared?
People usually call and ask that question. The first visit does not require specific preparation. Some imagine that they should not eat or drink all day, or should take medication for intestinal cleansing, but this is not necessary. If a person has a subjective feeling that it will be better, it can provide a microclimate with over-the-counter medications at the pharmacy, but it is also optional. If other preparations are needed in the future for a specific procedure, the doctor will tell you about them and prescribe the necessary medication. No medication, prescription, or medical prescription is unnecessary.
What questions does a proctologist have in an interview with the patient? Are there things to think in advance to be able to respond?
Basically the questions are about complaints, about the stomach and other things. If you have other illnesses, you should take the medical records with you. There are many people who go to the doctor and they forget a lot about what they want to ask. To prevent this from happening, it is preferable to pre-write your questions on paper. Ask your doctor questions are natural. Knowing the work of colleagues in developed Western countries, we see that a long time is spent on visiting patients, and people use it, are interested in different treatments, have sought information. We are pleased to work with these patients.
How is the patient examined?
It is done by a proctologist, helping a nurse. The investigations occur in a special closed observation room, during which the patient usually sleeps beside. The doctor will examine the anal area, which is usually followed by a fingerless examination, which is based on the use of a lubricant containing an anesthetic. Patients with abdominal pain or severe exacerbation of hemorrhoids may have a slightly more unpleasant sensation. In the first investigation, in most cases, a deeper inspection is performed with a disposable proctological mirror that allows viewing a rectangular section approximately 10 inches in length. It is also made with lubricant and is not painful. In most cases, the information in this review is sufficient to evaluate the patient's problems. If there is any suspicion, especially in case of bleeding, additional exams are prescribed. Colonoscopy, MRI, defecography, rectal ultrasonography, and other diagnostic methods are often needed, but are necessary for a relatively small number of patients. It is very important to check if we are dealing with malignant tumors, whose manifestations are very similar to those of the hemorrhoids. Therefore, patients should not hesitate to go to the doctor if they feel any discomfort in the anal region.
Many doctors say patients usually seek help only when problems have already been introduced. Is it also in proctology?
We have a wide variety of patients, some arrive on time, some are late. Of course, it is very unfortunate if the malignant neoplasm proves to be the site of the hemorrhoids of thought and the treatment is delayed. But when it comes to hemorrhoids, we can also help the patient in the final stages, though the treatment requires more effort and resources, usually surgical treatment. We evaluate the situation and offer solutions depending on the situation, explain which method is most appropriate and what are the other options, their advantages and disadvantages.
What treatment methods for proctologists are used to treat hemorrhoids?
Conservative treatment with oral preparations, such as candles and gels, is often possible. Sometimes it is just enough to have a lifestyle, proper nutrition and physical activity. Any treatment, especially surgical treatment, is only necessary if it interferes or bleeds. Hemorrhoid surgical treatment may be manipulative – associated with less interference with local anesthesia is well tolerated, painful, with the fastest result possible. If more interventions are needed – surgical operation, this requires more serious anesthesia and recovery is a little longer. Recently, laser technologies have also been introduced in practice, experts from our clinic are the first in Latvia to master laser technologies that effectively treat different stages of hemorrhoids. But there are also cases where the only alternative is classic surgery.
Are there cases where a proctologist should attend the test for prevention, although there is no complaint?
This can be useful, for example, for women who have had hemorrhoids and who plan to become pregnant. So, it is really correct to get tested on time because pregnancy and childbirth provoke hemorrhoids and exacerbation of hemorrhoids. If a woman joins a proctologist shortly before delivery, then the proctologist's options are limited because many needed medications and anesthesia are not recommended during pregnancy if surgery is needed.
Is it possible to use hemorrhoids to recur using modern methods of treatment?
The treatment is effective, but it must be said that no method is a panacea. The recurrence of problems depends on several factors related to the characteristics of the patient's body, general health, habits, opportunities and willingness to follow the doctor's lifestyle recommendations. Occasionally, people ask if they could "keep everything out" so the hemorrhoids will stop forming. It can be compared to the desire to go to the dentist to remove all the teeth so that they never need to be repaired. The blood vessel braiding around the rectum in the body performs a certain task – if the rectum collector can be compared to a water tap, this braid is like a fence that prevents dripping. If the hemorrhoids bother you after some time, come to us, we can offer the best treatment and understanding, tactical attitude.
