Amato was sentenced to 19 years and an arrest warrant for which he had withdrawn was pending. The part of Via Emilia, where the post office is located, was evacuated and two barrier points were created on the sides. Amato is originally from Rosarno, in the province of Reggio Calabria. He was arrested as part of the operation "Aemilia" on January 28, 2015 and sent to trial on December 21 of the same year. At the end of the trial, on 31 October, he was sentenced to 19 years and a month in prison on charges of having been one of the organizers of the activities of the "ndrangheta gangs" in Emilia-Romagna.

After a few hours, one of the five hostages, a woman, was removed from the branch. Outside, the woman had a failure and was rescued by the staff of 118 people.
