Kate and Prince William were married in April 2011 – eight years ago. Since they got married, they've been through a lot! Kate made the change of British citizen to a beloved duchess. William went from single to loving husband. The two grew up beautifully together, ending up with three beautiful children: Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. It really is a fairy tale brought to life.

But to get to where she is today, Kate had to leave some things behind. On the one hand, being a British plebian, Kate lived a very peaceful life, one that she had to give up walking alongside William. While dating, she had a taste of real life. It overwhelmed her, leading to two brief breaks in her relationship.

It was not just her privacy that she gave up too. She also sacrificed her independence. During the brief separation of Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in 2007, Kate was seen living it. She was photographed at many events, and her friends were able to enjoy her blossoming and getting comfort in her own skin.

She even signed up for a women-only boat race. One she trained very hard to win. As soon as their relationship was back on track, she left … confirming the worst fears of her friends. Kate was missing out on true love.

"There was, however, a victim of this romantic meeting: Kate herself." – Andrew Morton (William and Catherine)

What did Meghan Markle sacrifice to become a duchess?

Meghan was a successful Hollywood star when she retired. She withdrew from a show that she became a fan favorite and left her acting dreams behind. The controversial Duchess worked hard to get to Hollywood, abandoning her dreamy dream must have been difficult. But with love on the line, who could blame her?

Without a doubt, it is Meghan's career that was the most difficult hits, but it was not the only one. Unlike Kate, Meghan came from a completely different world. Of course, they are both commoners, but turning an American celebrity into a British is no easy task. While it is clear that Meghan has some room for maneuver, in a sense, she also had to leave loose rules and regulations tied to her nationality as well.

Then there are the "most material items". When Meghan moved around the world to stand beside her prince, she sold her apartment – her own personal space. What's even worse is that she could not take her beloved cub with her! Not to mention all your friends.

Which duchess gave up more for the royal family?

Both the Duchess of Sussex and the Duchess of Cambridge had to give up much independence to claim their royal titles. Kate lived a simple but prosperous life, out of the limelight; one of those traded to stay in the limelight with her husband. Meghan switched her celebrity status by actual status. While she was accustomed to fame and attention, being a real one comes with a set of rules that have virtually turned her life into her head!

Katen was already a British resident, so change, while overwhelming, does not necessarily mean leaving your friends and family behind. Meghan, on the other hand, has to cross the seas to stay with her best friends. It's really hard to decide who lost the most, especially when you take into account Kate's friend's comment. At least the two women seem incredibly happy and unlikely to regret their decision to change their lives.
