A young mother who was found dead in a hospital lost her life in a strange accident while nursing her newborn baby.

Sources said she believes the woman suffered an "episode" and was unconscious.

The child, who was also found on the floor with his mother, is seriously ill.

The team at the University of Cork's Maternity Hospital discovered the woman, who was in her thirties, Monday morning.

One source said: "The theory at the moment is that she got sick and fell from her bed on the floor.

"It's a strange tragic accident, the baby has only a few days to live. She was checked by the staff at 7 am and was discovered dead an hour later – there will have to be an autopsy to determine what exactly happened.

"There is also a review in the hospital to see if there has been any flaw – the baby is injured and receives medical treatment."

The boy was born last weekend and is in critical condition at the hospital's neonatology department. The single room where the mother was found was also
examined to see if there was anything in it.

Health agency HIQA said it is monitoring the situation and will examine the investigation.

A spokesman for the South / South West Hospital Group said: "We want to confirm that an investigation is underway following a tragic occurrence at the University of Cork's Maternity Hospital.

"Our priority is to support the patient's family and therefore we will not comment on the individual case at the moment."

Cork University Hospital and Maternity Hospital are one of the largest in the country.

His website said it offers single, double and four-bed rooms.

He added: "CUMH opened in March 2007 and involved the merger of maternity services at Erinville Hospital, St Finbarr Maternity Hospital, Bon Secours Maternity Unit and gynecology services at University Hospital Cork.
