Former Irish international and RTE commentator Liam Brady recorded his disappointment that Ireland's "best player" was out of the opening match against Gibraltar.
Mick McCarthy's men faced the Euro 2020 playoffs at the Aviva stadium tonight.
Before the game, Brady expressed his displeasure with one of McCarthy's decisions.
In conversation with RTE Sport: 'I'm disappointed and I'm sure the player himself will be very disappointed not to be playing tonight, Matt Doherty. I said some time ago that Mick has to find a place for this guy. I think he's our best player, if not one of our best players.
'He had a great season for Wolves, he scored goals and created goals. Having a player like him on the bench in a game like this is a mistake.
"I think it's a chance to find a place for him in the midfield. I know he said he did not see Coleman and Doherty being able to play together on the right side, we'll see him in another position.
Doherty started on the right side of the midfield in Ireland's victory over Gibraltar but was sent off in the middle of the second half.
The werewolf spoke at the Aviva stadium earlier this week:I mean, I do not know. Seamus and I talked about it, what we thought back then. We did not think we were that bad.
'Not much went out in that game for anyone, it was just one of those games. I think we believe we can play on the same team, we can work together, but it's not our choice. "
