I feel anxious and alone since I moved to Turkey to be with my boyfriend

DEAR DEIDRE: For part of the year, I moved to Turkey to be with my Turkish boyfriend and his family.

My problem is the language. I'm 27 years old, my boyfriend is one year older and we met when he was working in London.

He speaks Turkish and English fluently, his sister only a little English and his mother nothing.

I'm desperately trying to learn Turkish, but it's very different.

Her mother is adorable, but the language barrier makes it so difficult to be friendly with her.

I feel anxious and lonely, especially when I'm out of family conversations.

DEIDRE SAYS: It's great that you're trying. Be patient.

Ask your boyfriend to teach you some well-known phrases, but also to find a good teacher and ask your sister for conversation classes. Write down the specific things you want to say, like telling your mother that you appreciate her kindness or her food. One day, suddenly, you will feel much easier.
