Do half of Sony Mobile employees receive early retirement?

There are rumors that the Japanese electronics maker is laying off half of its employees in the smartphone division as part of the company's restructuring. It is estimated that the number reaches 2,000 employees out of a total of 4,000.

Some employees of the Japanese mobile division were offered to move to another division while employees in countries outside of Japan received early retirement programs or were laid off.

The new division to be formed by Sony, which is a combination of the mobile, TV and audio divisions, will be called "Electronic Products and Solutions".

Former Image VP Shigeki Ishizuka will lead the new division, which will begin operations on April 1, 2019.

Sony will also reduce its investment in the Southeast Asian region and will focus on the smartphone markets in Europe and East Asia.

Previously, Sony Mobie had left the Middle East in 2018.

The report by the Nikkei was quoted KompasTeknoOn Monday (1/4/2019), said that in the third quarter of 2018, Sony's mobile division was the only division that suffered losses.
