The Xiaomi Mi Band is one of the most affordable and attractive fitness accessories out there. Based on the immense popularity of last year's Mi Band 3, Xiaomi has now released its successor – Mi Band 4. The fitness band now comes with AMOLED color screen, an improved accelerometer for more effective motion tracking during physical activity in the microphone for voice control, and without any compromise in terms of the promising Mi Band 3 battery.
The first major highlight of the Mi Band 4 is the 0.95-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 240 × 120. This is a noticeable upgrade over the 0.78-inch monochrome OLED display of the Mi Band 3. The larger screen, now color-enhanced, will allow users to easily view notifications from multiple applications along with statistics related to physical activity. The fitness band also comes with 77 colored watchfaces.
Mi Band 4 comes with a better 6-axis accelerometer that can track activities such as walking, jogging, cycling and other exercise-related activities with exercise. As the Mi Band 4 is also water resistant to 5ATM or 50 meters, Xiaomi has added support to monitor swimming activities. The accelerometer can detect different swimming styles including backstroke, chest, butterfly, free-swim and mixed style, and is able to generate a SWOLF score to assess the swimmers' abilities.
Another important addition in the Mi Band 4 is the built-in microphone that can be used for voice commands. These voice commands for the Xiao smart assistant can be used to control a variety of smart products in Xiaomi's IoT ecosystem – including Xiaomi's robot cleaner, intelligent air conditioning, or the connected lamp. Mi Band 4 can also be used to control music playback.
NFC on the Mi Band 4 supports Alipay and can be used to make paperless transactions. For users who do not need it, Xiaomi will also be selling another variant with only Bluetooth and no NFC. In terms of battery life, Xiaomi claims that the non-NFC variant can last up to 20 days on a single charge, while the NFC version will last for 15 days. Battery life can, however, decrease with increasing frequency of automatic heart rate tracking and sleep tracking.
This time, Xiaomi also offers more colorful options for the bands and beyond the usual colors black, orange and purple, we also have beige and wine options. Mi Band 4 has a price of CNY 169 (~ $ 25) for the non-NFC variant and CNY 229 (~ $ 33). Xiaomi has also released special Avengers editing bands with superhero watchfaces and this costs CNY 329 (~ US $ 50).
The Mi Band 4 will be available in China from June 14 for the non-NFC variant, while the NFC variant will be available from June 18. Xiaomi has made no claims about availability outside of China, but we expect the fitness band to arrive in India soon.
