Printing of the 2019-20 budget documents begins with the Halwa & # 39;


NEW DÉLHI: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, State Minister for Financing Anurag Thakur and senior officials of the ministry on Saturday observed the symbolic ceremony "Halwa" to mark the launch of formal printing of documents relating to the 2019-2020 Union budget.

The NDA government would release the full budget for 2019-20 on July 5. On February 1, the government presented an interim budget to lead Parliament to agree to spend until the new government takes office after the general election.

Finance Secretary Subhash Chandra Garg, revenue secretary Ajay Bhushan Pandey, DIPAM secretary Atanu Chakraborty, and financial services secretary Rajiv Kumar also attended the customary pre-budget event.

"The Halwa ceremony marking the beginning of the printing process General Budget for the 2019-20 General Budget was held in the North Block here this afternoon in the august presence of the Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs, Nirmala Sitharaman," said a statement from Finance Ministry.

As part of the ritual, "halwa & # 39; is prepared in a large & khaki & # 39; (large fry pan) and served to all ministry personnel.

The significance of the event is that after the sweet dish is served, a large number of staff and support staff, who are directly associated with the budgeting and printing process, are required to remain in the ministry and remain isolated from their families until presentation of the budget in Lok Sabha.

They are not even allowed to contact their near and dear ones through telephone or any other form of communication such as email.

Only top finance ministry officials can go home.
