BEIJING (Xinhua) – China unveiled an experiment on Thursday simulating the process of a hovering probe, avoiding obstacles and landing to land on Mars.
The experiment was conducted in a test field, Asia's largest for extraterrestrial body landing tests, in Huailai County, Hebei Province, northern China.
China plans to launch the Mars spacecraft in 2020 to complete orbit, landing and moving on a mission, an unprecedented achievement, according to China's National Space Administration.
How to land safely on Mars is one of the mission's biggest challenges.
The experiment simulated Mars' gravity, about one third of Earth's gravity, to test the spacecraft's design.
Ambassadors and diplomats from 19 countries, including France, Italy and Brazil, as well as representatives of the European Union, African Union and Asia Pacific Space Cooperation Organization were invited to visit the experiment.
