Bengaluru: At least two people were killed and about 50 were arrested after a four-story building under construction collapsed in the Dharwad area north of Karnataka late Tuesday.

The incident occurred in the area of ​​Kumareshwara Nagar in the district, which is about 400 kilometers north of Bengaluru. Up to 10 ambulances and five firefighters were hired to carry out rescue and rescue operations.

The building collapsed, causing panic among neighbors and bystanders, a police officer said.

According to reports, construction was going on in the building in the last two years and work was underway on the third floor. The first two floors had about 60 shops in operation. Some reports suggest that about 150 people were in the stores when the structure fell.
Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy said he was shocked to learn of the collapse of the building under construction. He said eight people had been evicted from the rubble so far.

"I instructed the Chief Secretary to oversee the rescue operations. I also ordered the CS to send additional resources and expert rescuers on a special flight to Dharwad," he said.
