"Worst thing I've ever seen" – wild NFL fights
| Reading time: 3 minutes
Only seconds left to play in the NFL between the Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers. When the last attack actually two players come together. What follows is one of the most chaotic beats in NFL history.
NOnly eight seconds to go between the Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers in the NFL Football League. Then absolute chaos broke out. Punches, kicks – and lots of courtesy.
What happened? In US prime time, star Odell Beckham Jr. and defender Backer Mayfield maintained a firm grip on the game. Since losing his current quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, Pittsburgh has been relegated to newcomer Mason Rudolph – and he's having a dark day. Four times he throws the ball directly at the opponent, only half of his passes can be caught by teammates.
It was 9:07 to Cleveland, with eight seconds on the clock when Pittsburgh played the final attack and was already mentally on the bus home. Cleveland defender Myles Garrett prevented Steelers defender Rudolph from passing, grabbed him and knocked him to the ground. So far, everything is normal in the best football league in the world. However, when they were both on the floor, it seemed that Rudolph was fumbling with Garrett's helmet – which he did not like. Garrett pulled Rudolph's helmet up the grille of his face and hit his head. Pittsburgh's Maurkice Pouncey came in, threw Garrett to the ground and punched and kicked.
Initially, Rudolph did not fall from the helm goal, but turned to the referees with raised hands. But Brown defender Larry Ogunjobi attacked him from behind and shoved him to the ground.
The field created absolute chaos, countless players were involved in a grape. In the end, Cleveland's Myles Garrett and Larry Ogunjobi were expelled along with Pittsburgh's Maurkice Pouncey.
Joe Buck of Broadcasting Fox said, "This is the worst thing I've ever seen on a pro football field."
NFL stars are horrified
On Twitter, other NFL stars were horrified. Patrick Mahomes of Kansas City Chiefs wrote, "Bro, I can't believe this happened."
NFL legend Reggie Bush wrote on Twitter: "In all my life in football this has been perhaps the craziest thing I have ever seen on a pitch! They will suspend Myles Garrett for 30 years!"
Baker Mayfield called his mate's action "inexcusable" in an after-game interview and said Garrett was being suspended.
Garrett himself said after the game that his attack was "stupid". "I can't afford to be so relaxed," he admitted. "It doesn't suit me. It was an emotional game. But I'm not allowed to indulge in those emotions."
Indeed, it is questionable whether Garrett will enter another NFL camp this season. A multi-week lockout seems safe, perhaps even for the whole season. The Browns should now consider whether to dismiss Garrett.
And that's how the game went
Once the fight was resolved on the field, the last seconds could end. Stayed at 9:07 pm for Cleveland.
Cleveland Quaterback Baker Mayfield added 17 of 32 passes to other players for 193 yards and added a touchdown while playing his second game without a consecutive turnaround. In the first eight games this has happened 13 times.
For Pittsburgh, who ended the winning streak in four games, they now have five wins and five losses. Mason Rudolph brought only 23 of 44 passes to 221 yards for the man, with a touchdown and four interceptions.
