Huawei P30 Pro: Our First Impression

The first impression must be correct – and he does it with the Huawei P30 Pro without a doubt. The Chinese company knows exactly how to focus the benefits of a new smartphone and make the competition look old. One thing is clear with the P30 Pro, everything revolves around the camera – and very well. The first impression was excellent, but after a few weeks in use, our results now appear in the final test report, which shows all areas of this cell phone.

Huawei P30 Pro: Review

New camera, brand new design, larger battery and latest technology. We feel the Huawei P30 Pro in the tooth, because it is not all gold, what shines.

The camera of the Huawei P30 Pro

The Huawei P30 Pro is the first smartphone from the Chinese company equipped with a Leica quad camera. The latest generation of Huawei smartphones, the Mate 20 Pro and the P20 Pro, are only retaining the image quality of smartphones like the Galaxy S10 Plus when the company launches its next cracker. Almost everything has been improved on the new quad camera. Whether it's image sharpness, zoom capability or low-light performance. In our camera test of the Huawei P30 Pro, we quickly discovered that this smartphone plays in its own league:

The difference is particularly clear in direct comparison with the competition. The Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus and Google Pixel 3 belong to the Android industry to the best camera smartphones. Thus, it was interesting to compare the three devices directly with each other. They dominated various situations, but the winner was quickly determined:

Comparison Ultimate Camera: Vs. Huawei P30 Pro. Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus and Google Pixel 3.

The quad camera of the Huawei P30 Pro is universally applicable. There is basically no situation where you can not take a good photo. In good light conditions, smartphones do not take long. At night, however, the P30 Pro only seems more in the dark – while other smartphones do not notice anything.

Particularly impressive is the 50x zoom, where you should zoom in terms of image quality up to a maximum of 30 times. Everything else is erased. Even high magnification pictures taken from hands were enhanced by good image stabilization.

Professionals can take advantage of many manual configurations, but even the automatic mode and easy-to-use camera application ensure that normal users can create great photos.

OLED panel with acoustic display technology

Huawei remains true to the P30 Pro and waives, as its predecessor, the P20 Pro, a high-resolution OLED display. The expensive 999 euros smartphone dissolves on a screen diagonal of 6.47 inches with only 2,340 × 1,080 pixels. There is a small notch installed that houses the front camera of 32 MP. The screen is also rounded on both sides and held in a double border design. If you know Samsung, Huawei also took over. This rounding of the sides does not have an added value. They just serve the design.

The display quality of the OLED screen is very good. Although the white value does not match the Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus, it still moves at a high level. The brightness is very high, the color representation strong. Overall, almost the entire front of the smartphone is covered by the large OLED display. The chin, so that the bottom frame, but still is slightly thicker than the top frame.

What is not immediately noticeable is the missing headset. Huawei sets the P30 Pro to an "acoustic display". This technology vibrates the screen with a floating magnetic speaker on the screen, simulating a speaker cone. So the sound is when calling by vibrations led to the ear. This works great in normal everyday life, you hear the opposite, even in noisy environments very clear.

But what happens if the monitor is damaged? In fact, this has an impact. As the screen acts as a speaker membrane, you should avoid cracking the screen near the headset. This may make the sound or sound output worse when the phone no longer works. Small scratches or cracks that are not in the handset area have no effect. This is confirmed by Huawei.

The fingerprint sensor on the display

Like the Huawei Mate 20 Pro, the Huawei P30 Pro also has a fingerprint sensor under the display. It is also an optical sensor, but is positioned much lower and therefore can be better achieved with the thumb. In addition, the fingerprint sensor also reacts a little better. Huawei probably optimized the software. It still can not get used to a normal plastic fingerprint sensor.

In 3D facial recognition, Huawei omitted the P30 Pro. Although you can set up facial recognition with the front camera, this is very uncertain.

Huawei P30 Pro fits right in your hand

Not only the screen is rounded on both sides but also the back of the glass. The transition to the metal frame is not as perfect as the Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus. Here you can feel the picture more clearly. The controls are visibly out of the case and have a good pressure point. At 192 grams, the smartphone does not look too heavy either. You're just on the edge.

The design of the Huawei P30 Pro in detail:

To keep the outer dimensions as compact as possible, the top and bottom are straight. If the protruding main camera on the back did not move the center of gravity backwards, the smartphone could even be placed on the table.

Huawei P30 Pro: What's missing?

Even if you have to pay for the Huawei P30 Pro 999 euros, missing some features you would expect in the price range, in fact:

  • Notification LED: Alternatively, the always-on display, which now also displays some notifications from third-party applications.
  • Stereo speakers: The Huawei P30 Pro has only one mono speaker at the bottom. The acoustic display does not serve as sound body in this case. This makes the sound very unilateral and not bulky.
  • MicroSD Slot: Huawei continues to rely on its own standard for memory cards. The "Nano Memory Card" is and there is not much choice in storage capacity.
  • Front camera without autofocus: Although the front camera of the Huawei P30 Pro has a very high resolution of 32 MP, it does not have auto focus. So you should make sure that the sharpness is always present in the selfies.

Huawei P30 Pro: What is extra?

For the Huawei P30 Pro has some special features that distinguish the smartphone:

  • Huawei Super Charge 40 Watts: In just 30 minutes, the Huawei P30 Pro is charged at 70%. But you have to use the included power supply.
  • IR sensor: An IR transmitter is installed on top to turn the smartphone into a remote control.
  • Reverse charging: The Huawei P30 Pro can serve as a charging station for wireless and charge other smartphones or wireless devices. It even works with my Oral B brush. Very useful if you forget the charging station of the electric toothbrush or razor or do not want to carry it with you.
  • Huawei sharing: If you own a Huawei notebook, you can send photos directly from the smartphone to the notebook by holding the phone at a specific point on the notebook. Therefore, Huawei approaches its products, similar to Apple. How does this work, as found in the Huawei MateBook 13 test.

The performance of the Huawei P30 Pro

Immediately after the configuration of the Huawei P30 Pro and the many applications that you install for normal use, the performance of the smartphone was still not perfect. There were small delays from time to time. Over time, these were history. Installed is a Kirin 980 processor, which we already know from Huawei Mate 20 Pro. There are 8 GB of RAM. From performance, the processor is slightly behind the Exynos 9820 from Samsung. We did the benchmark comparison:

Comparison of reference: Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus vs. Huawei P30 Pro.

Overall, the Huawei P30 Pro runs very fast. It does not even come close to a smartphone with Google Pixel 3 or OnePlus, but it's close. Over time, machine learning should ensure that performance remains as good.

The Huawei P30 Pro Software

The software has no surprises. It's pre-installed Android 9 Pie with EMUI 9.1. If you use an older Huawei smartphone, you'll find your way right away. If you switch from pure Android or from another manufacturer such as Samsung, you first need to know the partially opaque settings and names of the features. To set up your smartphone perfectly, you can therefore look at our tips and tricks for the Huawei P30 Pro.

Huawei remains faithful to the software and installed, as well as Google applications and its own applications that perform the same task and therefore, doubly. There is also a lot of bloatware preinstalled, which does not really need to be on a 1,000 euro smartphone.

One thing was really negative for us. Recently, the power button on the Huawei P30 Pro on the side of the smartphone serves as a button for the Google Assistant. So if you want to disable your smartphone by pressing the power button, the Google Assistant will open instead of the drop-down menu to reboot or shut down. Only if you hold the power button pressed for longer, the option to turn off. Since this feature is linked to sending, and even if we did not know how to turn off the smartphone, Huawei is very unconcerned to meet inexperienced users with this preference.

Fortunately, this feature can be disabled in the Huawei P30 Pro settings. To do this, proceed as follows:

  • Settings> Smart help> Shortcuts and gestures> Google Assistant

Better yet, you can not hide the function. Such action again speaks volumes and confirms our impression that the software is unfortunately not intuitive and thoughtful.

Battery life of the Huawei P30 Pro

In this area, the Huawei P30 Pro can only shine. The battery life of the smartphone with the 4,200 mAh battery is very good. The lower display resolution ensures that the run time is always longer than a day, even if you use your smartphone intensively. With normal use, you can get up to two days. In low use also without problems in three days. We always get a display time of more than seven hours. More trend.

The Huawei P30 Pro also consumes incredibly low power in standby mode. If you do not use your smartphone, it can run smoothly for a few days without loss of battery capacity.

Huawei P30 Pro in test: Conclusion

The Huawei P30 Pro is a true camera smartphone. This phone is basically all about the Leica quad camera, which takes great photos and has an unmatched zoom. Battery life and performance are at a very high level and absolutely not to hide from the competition.

On the other hand, you have to make a few hits on the equipment. The smartphone has a relatively low screen resolution, no stereo speakers, no 3D face recognition, and no 3.5mm jack. In addition, only expensive Huawei memory cards can be used. If you can live with the small disadvantages and are looking for a smartphone with which you can take really good pictures, then the Huawei P30 Pro is the right place.
