IDC: Tablet shipments declined in the 16th straight quarter



The tablet market has now dropped by 15.4 percent compared to the previous year. In the third quarter of 2018, a drop of 8.6 percent occurred: 36.4 million units were shipped worldwide, compared to 39.9 million in the same quarter last year.

The only silver lining is that the decline in Q3 2018 is not a double digit. While only one-digit downturn in the 2017 quarter was experienced, Q1 2018 and 2018 were double digits.

Estimates come from IDC, which means both slate-shaped factors and separable ones, that is, tablet-type tablets. Apple kept its peak in the quarter, and Samsung and Amazon were looking for the top three.

Huawei was the only company in the top five to deliver more pills than the previous year. The first five manufacturers accounted for 68.4 percent of the market, compared to last year's 67.1 percent:

Apple's delivery number dropped by 600,000, but this was still a mild 0.7 percentage point gain (from 25.9% to 26.6%), as the market for the entire tablet was so low. The company was able to retain its leadership partly thanks to this year's iPad. The new iPad Pro announced this week that it will assist in the fourth quarter.

Samsung delivered 700,000 tablets less than a year ago and lost 0.7 percent market share (from 15.0 percent to 14.6 percent). The company's hull models have been reduced to more than detachable shipments. It seems that the new Galaxy Tab S4 and Galaxy Tab A 10.5 did not cause much friction.

Amazon delivered slightly fewer tablets (about 4.4 million), resulting in a 1.0 percent market share increase (11.0 percent to 12.0 percent) and a move to a third place. According to IDC, profits are due to strong Prime Day sales. By crossing the top five, Huawei delivered 200,000 tablets, earning 1.3 points and Lenovo delivering less than 800,000 tablets, lost 1.4 points.

The replacement cycle of tablets is still closer to traditional PCs than smartphones, and 2018 could not change that. The experiments of Apple and Microsoft discard tablets do not have a huge impact (yet?).

"The detachable market did not see growth in 2018, which was a worrying trend that had endured since the end of 2016," said Lauren Guenveur IDC research analyst. "In October, we implemented Apple's iPad Pro and Microsoft Surface Pro, as well as Samsung's and Google's new products, which allow us to conclude that in the last quarter of this year the lightest will be the detachable category. High-end PC OEMs are increasingly expanding new products as they continue to concentrate on their convertible portfolio, which will ultimately affect the overall direction of the divisible market.
