The Saudi airline, Flyadeal, said a decision on the order of the Boeing 737 MAX is imminent after the airline assesses whether it should continue with the order after two fatal accidents or change to another aircraft.
With 30 737 MAX 8s in order, with options for another 20, the potential $ 5.9 billion deal would only be a loss on the Boeing 737 if lost, but would further hamper passenger confidence and investor support after the outbreak of the media.
In an interview with Reuters, Flyadeal CEO Con Korfiatis said the following:
"We have maintained an open position in terms of how we will proceed to the fleet, considering the situation with MAX. At the moment, we do not yet have a decision, but it is imminent."
As the agreement is only a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), if Flyadeal is canceled, there will be little or almost no penalty, since no contractual agreement has been defined.
After the cancellation, Flyadeal announced that it would order the Airbus A320neo, which is the direct competitor of the 737 MAX. That would not change Flyadeal's plans much, as they already operate a fleet of A320 engine options, allowing simplified training.
Despite the fact that Boeing has tested new software for the Maneuverability Enhancement System (MCAS) being blamed, much more is needed to repair passenger confidence.
Do you think Flyadeal will cancel the MoU or do you think they will close a deal with Boeing?
