Ethiopia's Federal Police told the Federal Court in writing that it could not file a warrant to former spy chief Getachew Assefa, who would be in a hiding place in Tigray in northern Ethiopia, the VOA Amharic Service said Monday .
According to Meleskachew Ameha, VOA Amharic reporter in Addis Ababa, Federal Police told the court that he sent the court order to the Federal Police Division in the Tigray region, but was not given to the branch not to know the addresses of the suspects, including Asbeha Giday, Assefa Belay and Sisay Leul, all former members of the country's intelligence agency.
The Federal Police suggested that the court should write a letter of cooperation to the Tigray police commission.
On the other hand, the federal prosecutor argues that the suspects' cases can be seen in absentia after being notified via the print media.
Spy chief Getachew Assefa and his three former colleagues are facing serious corruption that could imply up to 12 years in prison.
The court will decide on the prosecutor's request on June 19, 2019.
