November 5, 2018 (GMN) – Ethiopia has a new government spokeswoman as on Monday with the appointment of Billene Seyoum as press secretary in the office of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

She must be assisted by another woman, as Helen Yosef, was also confirmed as deputy secretary of the press. Both Billene and Helen have extensive experiences in communication and journalism, according to Addis Standard, which is independently owned.

The new press secretary held her first interview for local and foreign journalists on Monday with reports that she announced the issuance of media access badges operating within the PM's office.

Until Billene's appointment, government communications almost became the work of Abiy's former chief of staff, Fitsum Arega. The press secretary is a new office of Abiy's new chief of staff, Shimelis Abdissa.

Former incumbent Arega is taking up a new post as Commissioner for Ethiopia's Investment Committee, EIC.

I would like to announce that I will return to the Ethiopian Investment Committee – as Commissioner. I immensely enjoyed my time as Head of the Cabinet, serving a historic prime minister who will undoubtedly transform the country for the better. #Ethiopia (State media)
