American Express and Uber announced a new offer to select cardholders on Monday. U.S. customers with a Platinum, Gold or Green consumer credit card can receive a free 12-month subscription to Uber Eats, the company’s food delivery service.
- American Express is offering a free 12-month subscription to Uber Eats for US Platinum, Gold or Green consumer credit card holders.
- The American Express Gold Card will also offer up to $ 120 in Uber credits starting in 2021.
- The card issuer already offers up to $ 200 in Uber credits annually to its Platinum cardholders and also offers bonus rewards on dinners, take-out food and delivery on their Gold and Green cards.
- This is yet another move by a major credit card issuer to adapt to changes in consumer spending habits during the coronavirus pandemic.
Which cardholders qualify and what do they receive?
American Express has been at the forefront of credit card industry initiatives to respond to the coronavirus pandemic and its effect on consumer spending patterns. The bank and the card issuer added additional benefits to many of their Amex-branded cards and also to some of the cards with joint-brand partners, including Delta, Hilton and Marriott.
With this latest benefit, US cardholders with a Platinum, Gold or Green consumer credit card will get a free Eats Pass membership through Uber Eats for up to 12 months. The monthly subscription offers unlimited delivery fees of $ 0 on restaurant orders, 5% discount on restaurant orders over $ 15 and, in select markets, $ 0 delivery fees on grocery deliveries.
The subscription usually costs $ 9.99 a month, making the benefit worth around $ 120. To take advantage of the promotion, you must sign up by December 31, 2021. Please note that the benefit is not available with credit cards Platinum, Gold or Green.
In addition to this advantage, American Express Gold cardholders will soon receive a new additional benefit. Early next year – Amex has not provided a date – customers with the card will receive $ 10 per month in Uber Cash (up to $ 120 per year), which they can use on Uber Eats orders or Uber rides in the U.S.
This advantage is in addition to the $ 120 annual meal credit (also up to $ 10 per month), which cardholders can obtain when spending with Grubhub, Seamless, The Cheesecake Factory, Ruth’s Chris Steak House, Boxed and local Shake Shack participants.
Pros and cons of the Amex-Uber offer
According to a survey conducted by Amex, 50% of consumers ordered take-out food and delivery more frequently during the pandemic than before. Therefore, this offer can help qualified cardholders to save money on purchases they are already making.
The potential downside is that the promise of reduced fees and discounts can cause some cardholders to spend money on food delivery when they would not otherwise.
Cardholders should also note that after the end of the 12-month free period, their card will automatically be charged at the then current Eats Pass subscription price each month, unless they choose to leave.
Even if you don’t plan to use Uber Eats frequently, having this option at reduced costs should be attractive if you have an eligible card.
In addition to the Eats Pass benefit, adding an annual $ 120 Uber Cash bonus for Amex Gold Card holders will be an even stronger case for giving you the title of best meal credit card. The advantage will complement the existing meal credit and your 4 points per dollar at restaurants around the world.
