525 people infected with cholera in Ethiopia – Middle East Monitor

At least 525 people have been infected with the cholera bacteria in Ethiopia, according to health sources on Tuesday, reports Anadolu Agency.

The Ethiopian Institute of Public Health confirmed the cause of the death of 16 people by this infectious disease caused by the bacterium Vibrio.

The deadly epidemic occurred in Oromia, Amhara, Tigray regional states as well as in the administration of the city of Addis Ababa.

The majority of the victims were registered in Amhara, with 14 people, the local FANA quoted Beyene Moges, the deputy director of the institute, as saying at a press conference.

Beyene also quoted saying that 19 samples were examined in a laboratory to determine the cause.

Medications were dispatched to the affected areas, according to FANA.

Cholera is an acute epidemic infectious disease and is characterized by watery diarrhea, extreme loss of fluids and electrolytes and severe dehydration.
