The GL class, renamed GLS since 2016, is Mercedes' main SUV. The third generation brings only some unusual features to this class. Which ones are they?

After some confusion in the labeling of its crossovers and SUVs, everything has been much clearer for years. The first two letters in the model name, GL, indicate the crossover or SUV, the third letter indicates that the sedan model line is based. Thus, the GLA is derived from class A, the GLC is based on a compact "C", the GLE is a higher class E, and the GLS is the largest, based on "esk". The GLS label was first used after the GL generation in 2016.

Does he actually wash himself?

First of all, before we talk about the car itself, we start with a technique that attracted us most when reading a press release. This is the Carwash function, ie car wash. No, the car does not really wash. Even then, Mercedes did not advance the technique.

The Carwash feature, which is in the new GLS standard, is designed to make it easier for the driver to drive through the dishwasher. When the function is activated, the chassis is adjusted to the highest position (due to pneumatic suspension), which also decreases the belt width (due to shaft geometry). At the same time, the clearance at the wheel arches is increased, thereby facilitating water penetration and thus a prerequisite for more efficient washing.

But that is not all. At the same time, the exterior mirrors are electrically folded, the windows open are closed, including the roof, the rain sensor is deactivated and the air conditioning system switches to internal circulation. At the same time, the 360 ​​degree camera function is activated. After washing the car, the driver does not need to deactivate the Carwash function because it automatically shuts off when the vehicle reaches a speed of 20 km / h.

How to reduce noise

Now a little more common. The new, third generation of the model, in the current world premiere. Not in China, but in the opposite hemisphere in the US, specifically in the New York Hall. With a length of 5.207 mm, it is 77 mm longer than the previous generation X166. The wheelbase was increased by 60 mm to 3135 mm, which resulted in an increase in longitudinal space, especially in the second row of seats. These are designed as three separate "armchairs", even fitted electrically.

The new third row of seats can be folded to the floor of the vehicle when not in use. In addition, if you fold the second row backrests, the trunk can accommodate up to 2,400 liters

The car is again a little bigger. But what draws the most from the outside? For example, the new Multibeam LED headlamps are standard. This design hides a very powerful lighting system with 112 (!) Diodes by light source as light source. Daytime running lights are responsible for three LEDs on each lamp.

The new body also offers a better aerodynamic solution, represented by a drag coefficient of Cx equal to 0.32. The predecessor was 0.03 higher. According to the manufacturer, GLS belongs to the best aerodynamically designed cars in its class. Special attention was given to the airflow in the engine compartment. This is because the vibration produces a low frequency sound, which can be unpleasant in conjunction with the very low noise level expected in the car described.

Equipment and entertainment

The next-generation GLS offers passengers the right level of equipment and fun. Many of these are hidden under the MBUX Infotainment (Mercedes Benz User Experience). It is a replacement for the familiar Command interface, with MBUX being the first of the current A-Class in the last year.

It is based on two 12.3-inch screens. One includes an electronic instrument shield, the other an interface monitor in the center of the panel. In the context of MBUX, the question was why the monitors are two and not just one. The answer is the price when two smaller ones are cheaper than a big one.

The MBUX touch screen can be used to control a large amount of comfort equipment. But that is not all, the system is even effective (the so-called fuzzy logic function, known from automatic transmissions). As a result, they basically learn the habits of their users.

With integrated trigger

The six- and eight-cylinder units will be used to power the next-generation GLS. All gasoline engines will be paired with the built-in 48-volt EQ Booster generator as standard. In the case of the GLS 580 8-cylinder, this means an extra 16 kW for a large 360 ​​kW. In addition, the addition of torque is not negligible, as it offers an additional 250 N.m which is added to the 700 N.m of the internal combustion engine.

The level below is the GLS 450 4Matic in-line six-cylinder engine with a power of 270 kW and a maximum torque of 500 N.m. Even in this case, it is connected to the EQ Booster.

For Europe and Russia, the new Mercedes GLS will also be supplied with diesel engines. These are exclusively inline six-cylinder engines, while the 350 d 4Matic is a 210 kW power unit. More power is provided by the GLS 400 d 4Matic, 243 kW. Of course, the standard is SCR technology.

All engines will be connected exclusively to the 9G-Tronic automatic transmission and combined with the 4Matic all-wheel drive. It is based on a multi-plate clutch controlled electronically mounted in the inverter transfer. Essentially, it connects the front axle to the drive chain according to the current driving conditions.

An interesting feature related to the chassis is the E-Active Body Control system, which can be part of the Airmatic air suspension. It uses a 48 volt on-board network, adjusting the suspension characteristics to the current driving surface.
