Although Scala is a hot new car, it has come a long way. As we know from the outset, he will replace Rapid in the Mladá Boleslav brand hierarchy, and only one – the hatchback – will be offered from two versions of the body. The Scala concept became the concept of the Vision RS, and in retrospect the main features of the exterior were preserved, as Skoda had promised. We also took the masked prototypes, saw the car in the studio and also the world premiere in Tel Aviv. All we had to do was go for the first time on the road with a standard car.
We did it now, in the early days of April. As we informed you yesterday, Skoda invited us to test the tours in Split, Croatia, where we could try different configurations with different engines. And the ones we lost may not be an excuse. The inclusion of new levels in the fleet of press tests is a matter of the coming days.
A new worldview
The official inauguration of a car in Tel Aviv proved to be a truly new design idea. Not only on the outside but also on the inside. You can still remember how a social network of photos revealed a prototype that did not look very good. Either it was the wrong angle, or one of the other visual variations possible, but Scala does not look that way. On the contrary. It's actually quite good for her and it seems clearly the bravest of the current Škoda cars.
If you have had a problem recognizing Octavia and Rapid in transit, Scala is not in danger. The novelty features a more distinctive mask with a wide chrome finish and is accompanied by new triangular headlights. In the higher gear they will be totally diode, in the lower LED technology will remain at least for the light beam and the daylight.
The diodes can also be found on the back, where they will be combined with dynamic turn signals at higher levels of gear, as we know from Audi models. Scala is the first Škoda to receive this feature. However, just in the back, front and back, you will order them with the new urban Kamiq SUV.
You will remember that Rapid Spaceback offered two different solutions to the rear. A classic with a smaller window and a second with a glass stretched between the lamps. Obviously, more attractive, of course, was an elongated window that formed a black stripe on the lid of the suitcase. And believe me it will be double for Scal. Unlike the Rapida, it's insignificant Skoda in the back, instead of a silvery logo that stands out in a black treasure. On the contrary, this element will disappear in the light green or even white paint.
Simply add that inscription instead of the back logo will gradually become an innovation for all Skoda cars, not just for the new ones. On the highways around Mladá Boleslav, we already have a seven-digit Kodiak SUV, which, however, does not offer stretched glass.
While the Rapid could have wheels 14 to 17 inches, the Scala moves the palette from one inch to fifteen to eighteen inches. And, of course, there are several original appearances. While the silver eighteen, which Scala is using in press photos, looks very beautiful, the "full" black wheels focused on maximizing aerodynamics are no longer so beautiful. But it's a matter of taste.
The novelty is based on the MQB A0 platform, the same base of the new Audi A1, Seat Ibiza and Volkswagen Polo. Can Scala really be seen as a compact compact hatchback? According to Skoda, yes and has its explanation: the platform should not be perceived as a limited basis, but a set of building modules that can be combined in different ways to create a functional and refined unit. However, the architecture also has its limitations: the Scala is only available with rear rear axle, front wheel drive or mechanical parking brake. In addition, the weaker versions of Scala have to do with drum brakes.
The external dimensions of the compact also reveal 4362 x 1793 x 1471 mm in the Scaly case. The wheelbase is 2649 mm. In practice, the novelty compared to Rapid is 58 mm longer, 87 mm wider and 12 mm higher. The wheelbase stretched by a substantial 47mm and the altered proportions are aided by altered protrusions: the front is shortened by 34mm, the rear is extended by 45mm.

The cabin has style
The interior has also undergone considerable redesign. Scala owns a new cabin concept with a narrow panel and an independent multimedia system screen. They will be offered on the three-swing scale (6.5 "), Bolero (8") and Amundsen with Navigation (9.2 "). While the initial two versions have not yet abandoned conventional traditional controls on the sides, it is already a touch screen.Platforms to switch between services are on the sides and relatively close, so it is not easy to reach the direction.In this case, I would not match the bigger and better.
Of course, Skoda will also offer a digital instrument shield with several display options, including a tachometer in the center. You need time to orient yourself in individual appearances, but you just need to find your favorite, which you will get used to after a few miles. And one more interesting thing: Scala relies exclusively on more modern USB-C connectors (two front, two rear). It is not a classic USB, but a solution that, unlike the predecessor, can not insert "wrong". The problem is that this pattern is not yet widespread, which caught us with Ondra soon after reaching the destination of the test. We would have scraped the interior of the scaly with the telephones and the classic cable. Luckily, Skoda thought about it and left a thread for us in the car.
Much has been done in the cabin on the materials used, which Rapid can only envy. Not only are the areas of the cabin now fairly smoothed, they also have a sleek, brittle gray that is often blamed on the Group's interiors. Look in the gallery, for example, at the front passenger decor or decorative frames. They are basically made of shiny black plastic, replaced by chrome in superior versions and ambient lighting. However, this does not mean that the interior is completely perfect, as you can see in the door finish, which is "poorer" compared to instrumentation.
However, the appearance is only half as successful. The latter, in the case of Skoda, is a space in which Boleslav's automaker built a business and Scala only confirms it. We have plenty of space around us in terms of compact hatchbacks. With a height of 176 centimeters, I found an ideal steering position and had a few inches of reserve behind the knees and above, where even the panoramic roof was no longer in place.
Especially the seat cushions do not have such a strong lateral orientation, but they are long and the seats are very comfortable so they do not tire of longer journeys. Not just the front but also the back. A great advantage is the huge glazed surfaces and the fine columns. It's not just the airy interior, but you also have a great view backwards when inverter.
Of course, he also improved his luggage. Although Scala's 467 liters are not basically a class record (the Honda Civic has 478 liters), we're talking about a 52-liter increase over Rapid, which is more than decent. Scala gets a bottom of variable height and you can now deny the floor with sloping corners, so you do not have to hold it when carrying small things. You can also request an electrically lockable trailer hitch, unlike the Rapida, there is no backrest for skiing on the backrest.
As you may have noticed in the video above, Scala did not forget the typical "smart" Skoda elements. You may have heard of the rubber cover of the windshield washer fluid reservoir. On the fuel tank cover, there is also a scraper that can also measure the tread of the tire. Also interesting is the panoramic window curtain, which is newly opened at the back. While passengers in the second row can enjoy the sun, the driver is in the shade, which is certainly more pleasant behind the wheel.
The Scala is the first online of Škoda and of course there is no compulsory eCall but also a proactive service such as information on car health cards and service inspection planning. Unlocking or locking the door through a smartphone is another effect, while updating the map background or multimedia system software remotely from the comfort of your home.
Regarding the engine pallet, Scala offers well-known corporate classics. It starts with a liter of three cylinders with 70 or 85 kW. The Weaker is always paired with a five-speed manual transmission, the strongest version has an extra quality. As an alternative to a more powerful liter, the DSG 7-speed automatic transmission is also available for the 1.5 TSI / 110kW four-cylinder with two cylinders and a single diesel engine – 1.6 TDI / 85kW – plus the six-speed manual. All engines are turbocharged, equipped with stop / start system, direct fuel injection and particulate filter.
From alternative drives, Scala will only offer a CNG version, specifically the 1.0 G-Tec with 66 kW power, which will be coupled to a six-speed manual. Fits 14.2 kg of natural gas and nine liters of fuel. On the other hand, the hybrid, plug-in hybrid or pure electric version of Skoda does not rely on this model.
Peaceful and comfortable
The first to sit behind the wheel of a more robust three-liter three-liter with manual gearbox. From the beginning, we like the refinement and the noise not only of the engine, but of the whole car. The engine is bravely and free from low-speed vibration and progresses through the tachometer to the characteristic seam that encourages a higher gear. At the highest stage, the engine turns at 90 km / h around two thousand revolutions, and the thirty-one highway turns the lever at 2800 revolutions. As for the negatives, I noticed a single delay in pressing the accelerator pedal. Well, emissions …
It's also good to work with a six-step manual. It has a clearly defined background with short paths on which the lever travels safely and accurately.
Both samples tested were mounted on the Chassis Sport Preset, which can be installed on all engines. It is 15 mm lower, more resilient and gives the driver a choice of two damping rigidity. It is an adaptive chassis, but it is not a DCC familiar solution that adapts to instantaneous conditions. To switch between the modes, a solenoid valve is used, which alters the cross section of liquid flowing through the muffler, thereby regulating its stiffness.
I have no comparison with a conventional chassis, but I certainly did not think it would be significantly hard on the normal chassis. On the contrary. The car oscillates on most of the unevenness and increases driving comfort. It is noticeable to switch to sport mode when the chassis really solidifies and you suddenly know more exactly what is happening under the wheels. What's more, comfort was not palpably worse, even when we moved from seventeen inches to eighteen inches. So the Scala tax on the best does not seem to be that high.
Overall, the Skoda tuning equipment was really successful and especially strumming the comfortable note, which is also aided by excellent sound insulation. The rolling noise of the wheels is not heard even at the speed of the road, you will feel only a stronger aerodynamic twist around the mirrors. With the siding at the rear of the car in a series of inequalities will start to slightly shake the crew, but it is not essential. The axle is placed in hydraulic beds that Škoda has already developed for the rejuvenated octavia. Although you may have newly developed drum brakes (they are as effective as blades), the tested specimens have a more modern solution. For 1.5 TSI and 1.6 TDI engines, discs are the standard choice.
The second ride is completed with a single four-cylinder gasoline engine, the fifteen-wheeler, which replaced the old one-four in the range of engines of concern. Of course the overall character of the engine is more sophisticated than in the case of a liter, but paradoxically, when the accelerator pedal is pressed to the ground, the unit is noisier and acoustically "poisonous" than a liter. At a highway speed of 2,400 revolutions in the highest gear in ninety, the hand is slightly above fifteen hundred. Engine role performance is not lacking and you do not have to worry about overtaking the long climb. But we preferred to continue with the Czech roads, because some radar spied on us Croats for a while.
In most situations, the DSG gearbox knew what to do with the engine. She managed to prick the place without pulling, and individual qualities watched carefully. Attempts at emission standards were evident only when they slowed down, when the seven-speed automatic machine had the highest level possible at any cost. An alternative may be the manual mode and the paddles under the steering wheel. The hand-to-hand answers are instantaneous, but on the other hand, the gearbox does not leave the work entirely under its responsibility.
The well-tuned power steering also comes second to the comfort chassis. This is very cool here. It does not give you any feedback, but works well with you not only for a quiet ride but also for a more intense pace. Only at really high speeds will you begin to feel more underestimated and the fact that Scala is not fully built for sports. It is still necessary to keep in mind that its maximum performance is fifteen hundred with 110 kW. On the other hand, I'm not saying you would not be able to handle a strong two-liter, certainly not!
The consumption of a liter of three cylinders was very distorted by the conditions – to drive in the city and delays in taking photos. We focus more on this in the case of fifteen hundred. She talked about 7.5 liters in the district at a fast pace. On the way back, however, we faced frequent speed restrictions and traffic was minimal, which rewarded the result with a value of 6.3 liters. This is a very good number for a slot machine.
The first impressions of the new Scala are more than good, after at least the first ten kilometers of common kilometers. The novelty has a tougher appearance, a better cabin, but has not forgotten the distinctive features of Skoda – breadth, practicality and smart solutions. The adaptive chassis is a pleasant surprise, but let's see how it handles our broken roads. After all, the roads around Split are very good and the chassis was not "punished". And the absence of a powerful engine is a bit disappointing, Scala would certainly deserve this. So let's see, speculations about the RS version recently started to pile up, maybe we'll finally see.
For a more detailed comparison with the competition, we wait for home. But it seems that even if the Scala has a smaller base, a golf course, Ceed or Astra certainly will not be afraid. Yes, these comparative tests will be very interesting.
