After half a year, the new major model of the largest Chinese manufacturer is launched. The Huawei P30 Pro offers a gradual design and functional evolution with the greatest focus on the camera. This is perhaps the most different from the previous Mate 20 Pro, which otherwise takes up most of the equipment and technology. Year-on-year, the manufacturer has raised the price (against the P20 Pro) while only a little by five hundred – P30 Pro in the lower memory version of 6 + 128 GB is for sale for CZK 22 490.

Huawei P30 Pro is the current top model of the Chinese brand
As part of the one year cycle, Huawei has set out a strategy to always prepare a completely new version of the camera along with Leica in the fall, it will be upgraded to processor, performance and other components. The third separate line is the flexible screen model Huawei Mate X, which is a super premium portfolio and still not considered a mass-marketed device.
The Huawei P30 Pro tested is a top-of-the-line smartphone in every aspect, with a quad-camera rear with 5x periscope optical zoom. Produces great photos in daytime conditions and has no competition between smartphones at night. Other features such as two-day battery life, fast wireless recharge or a fast and accurate fingerprint reader make daily use more enjoyable.

Display
Great Full HD + OLED. Huawei puts OLED panels on their smartphones sporadically – saving them only on top models. So the P30 Pro has arrived and the screen is excellent. Although Full HD + resolution is sufficient – the thinner 2K panel remains reserved for the Mate series, but the resolution is sufficient for a diagonal of 6.5 inches.

The screen has only minimal edges and a cut of drops
The panel is widescreen (19.5: 9) with a small drop cutout for a 32MP front camera. It has excellent color rendering, perfect black, wide viewing angles and maximum brightness very good. In our opinion, the white balance is optimally chosen especially in live mode, or the color temperature can be adjusted in the settings.

You can set the color rendering or hide the cutout with a black bar
The smaller the clipping, the better for system notifications whose pictograms fit the most, but on the other hand, a deep 3D scan of the face (again the privilege of Mate 20 Pro) had to give way. This can make the face unlocked a little less accurate, especially in the dark. Fortunately, there is another biometric security in the form of a fingerprint reader integrated into the screen glass. Unlike Matu 20 Pro, it is faster and more accurate. His sensor was moved to the bottom of the screen, a position closer to the center of gravity would be more practical.

Like the fingerprint reader, the device hid under the screen
Within the purest design of cleaning and eliminating the edges around the display, the manufacturer, even for the first time with their handsets, was to clear the grille of the phone and hide it under the glass of the screen. We were a bit concerned about the sound quality during the call but fortunately it was not confirmed – but we would like the maximum volume of the piezoelectric headphones to be higher. However, the phone has lost stereo effect when playing music on the speaker – the handset below the display is not active for this activity. And there was no more space for the notification diode.

The screen glass is curved to the edges
Hardware
The best of Matu 20 Pro. In terms of technical equipment, the P30 comes as no surprise – the manufacturer used most of the elements it installed Mate 20 Pro six months ago, including the newly introduced technology. The P30 Pro includes a Kirin 980 processor with support for Artificial Intelligence, 6 + 128 or 8 + 256 GB memory, a 4200 mAh battery and fast wireless and wired loading technology. In the synthetic Antutu benchmark, the phone reaches more than 300,000 points, ranking it among the ten most powerful Androids at the time of writing.

The busiest elements are the bottom edge, only the microphone and infrared at the top
The phone is sold as a Dual SIM with a shared hybrid slot. You can put a couple of nanoSIM cards in it or replace it with a somewhat controversial NM card format. There is nothing wrong with this, it has microSD features and smaller dimensions, but unfortunately this type of card except Huawei is not yet produced and at a cost of about two thousand for a capacity of 128 GB is a fairly expensive spass .

Antutu benchmark result
Sound performance, whether in headphones or mono speakers at the bottom, is fairly average. We would especially appreciate the highest peak volume. The phone supports AAC, aptX HD and LDAC for wireless audio streaming. We must praise the great sensitivity of the phone to the signals of the mobile network, be it for voice calls or data transfer. Total LTE connectivity, including VoLTE, dual Wi-Fi, GPS and Galileo, and infrared to control handsets is a natural thing for Huawei's top models.

Double-sided drawer for two NanoSIMs or one NanoSIM and one NM card
Like the Mate 20, the battery has a capacity of 4,200 mAh. This ensures the most demanding users at least a full day with a single charge, but most users will recharge every day. Fast Wiring SuperCharge 40 W means only 75 minutes in the full capacity charger, fast wireless charging (for example with the Huawei CP60) is suitable for continuous daytime power supply. As a bonus, there is still a reverse wireless recharge to replenish other devices.
Software
The superstructure adjusts the details. The phone includes the well-known EMUI extension, which Huawei brought to version 9.1 of Android over Android 9. It is fast and well-organized for beginners. It uses some of its features in Android 9 (for example, Digital Balance, Gesture Control), but the evolution of previous versions of EMUI remains the foundation.

Configuration and customization options are wide again. The basis you choose according to your habits is the choice of displaying applications (all on the desktop or in the "drawer" system – all applications in a separate menu and on the desktop only by selected application representatives) and the way of moving in the environment. There are classic three virtual android buttons or a gesture control that is quite addictive. There is no "pill" button like in pure Android 9, but a floating navigation button overrides similar functions.

You can choose all applications on the desktop or in the drawer • Settings menu is trying to simplify, but it is still very embarrassing • In the battery menu, you can choose a more economical dark mode that permeates the entire environment • Always on moved displays
Huawei is trying to simplify and clarify the configuration menu. Although there are still more nested levels of "other settings", but generally there are less important items. Typically, the full-text search box is the best abbreviation, but you need to know the exact item. The graphics have changed a bit, the well-known technical source continues to be reproduced, Huawei's own application icons have adapted somewhat to Google's, so there are not many gadgets close to each other.

Three basic ways to control your fingers • You can use various motion gestures to control
Whether Huawei also listens to user feedback shows, for example, moving the Always On setting to a more logical Home screen submenu or implementing a popular double-tap gesture to turn the display on.

The new Android 9 Digital Scale feature shows how much time you spend on your smartphone • your phone uses a SwiftKey keyboard • you can control a variety of devices with infrared • Huawei adds its own browser over time
The manufacturer is again using some Android creator applications (eg SMS editor), most of them have alternatives (gallery, music player, email client, calendar, AppGallery own market). Interesting is the return of the Huawei internet browser itself in the EMUI version 9.1, but of course, Google is also missing. Huawei has not completely avoided third-party pre-installed applications such as Booking or Amazon – fortunately, they can be completely uninstalled. It uses SwiftKey as the primary virtual keyboard, but you can install another.

Transfer files from your phone to your Huawei laptop using OneHop
As a novelty in the P30 Pro, the manufacturer introduced the OneHop feature to quickly transfer content from the smartphone to the PC or vice versa. This feature is available with selected notebooks from Huawei Matebook, with the P30 Pro to expand and activate with the NFC function. In the same way, you can insert or copy texts between the notebook and the phone, and make a brief screencast on the computer screen.
Camera
Unmatched nightly pictures. The Leica quad-camera is the device's main pride. He won 112 points in an independent, respected DXOMark phototest, ranking him first (along with writing time) with the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G. The lenses and sensors are folded to match the versatile photographic use of the phone, from classic images, through portraits, macros, wide-angle shots, zooming objects and challenging night photography.

The camera was developed by Huawei in conjunction with Leica, Germany
A major innovation is the new 40Mpx Superspectrum sensor, which in addition to high resolution offers a new matrix of RYB points (instead of traditional RGB), where the green dot replaces yellow. That means more vivid pictures, more light and more detail. New in manual mode allows shooting with ISO sensitivity up to 409,600, which so far no other smartphone can.
Taking the camera on Huawei P30 Pro:
- Superspectrum Sensor 40Mpx, 27mm, f1.6, OIS
- 20Mpx sensor, 16mm wide angle lens, f2.2
- 8Mpx sensor, 5x optical zoom 125mm, f3.4, OIS
- Time of Flight (ToF) camera for depth mapping
- 32Mpx f2.0 front selfie camera
The third lens (at the "lens light", the lowest when the device is held vertically) is different from the view. There is a square view instead of the usual circle. Under the glass there is an optical prism that breaks the light 90 degrees to the side of the smartphone, where the lenses are already behind. This lens is a 5x optical zoom lens. If the periscope light was not used, the phone would probably be thicker.

Lens placement scheme on body P30 Pro
Of course, all lenses inside the camera work together, and thanks to the large area of the main sensor and the periscope lens, a 10x zoom-free zoom (hybrid zoom) can be achieved. In addition, a widescreen image can be used so you can switch to 0.6 ×, 1 ×, 5 ×, and 10 × zoom within the frame. It should be noted that a jump between 1 × and 5 × zoom is unnecessarily large and many scenes still fit in the 3 × zoom.

Basic Auto Camera Mode • camera settings • other modes
New is a long exposure that can be set not only in night mode, but also in the main mode of the camera. There is a new "velvety water level" effect and portrait mode has been improved, which is really great thanks to the ToF camera. The Bokeh effect can be set at various levels and after the image is created, the blur is further changed. But ToF will also serve a more accurate measurement of space in augmented reality (RA) applications, and the moving emoticons that Huawei is now called 3D Life Objects are also being improved.
The dynamic range of the camera has been greatly enhanced and is known as AI HDR +. However, it is still necessary to activate the independent mode for HDR and it is not possible to apply the function in the main auto mode, for example. Artificial Intelligence enhancement is no longer a default option, a taskbar icon is available to enable AI, and you do not have to configure it for it.

Outer night
Photographs are one of the best things to get out of today's smartphones. The P30 Pro continues to feature crisp edge edging and maximum noise elimination at edge boundaries, resulting in very pleasing images. Fortunately, the embellishment is not as strong as last year's P20 Pro, so the images look real. The degree of detail in each frame is impressive. When using the zoom, the quality is lost a bit, but still good. Wide-angle photos and beautiful close-ups will keep you entertained.
Absolutely independent discipline in which Huawei currently has no competition is that of night shots. The manual blinds without the need for a tripod are unparalleled in mobile phones. Sometimes it is not necessary to turn on the night mode, HDR and stabilization supported by artificial intelligence will do everything for you. Below, you can see a comparison of the camera on the Huawei P30 Pro with a half-year-old Mate 20 Pro, when shooting in almost total darkness. It is easy to see that, even in the context of its own models, Huawei can further enhance night photography.
P30 Pro:
Kill 20 Pro:
An important part of the camera is also video. The camera can handle 4K (UHD), but we have the most successful Full HD video of 60 fps. For video, it helps optical image stabilization (OIS) and software, where artificial intelligence (AIS) is applied. The new Low Light Video mode allows you to shoot in low light conditions. The dual display mode uses two cameras at the same time – one shoots a wider scene, the other zooms in. We have not yet been able to experience these modes, as they will be part of a software update that will arrive in the coming weeks.
Sample Daily Video (Full HD, 60 fps):
Sample Night Video (Full HD, 30 fps):
Huawei P30 Pro made visible progress in the video, stabilization is its strongest point. Exposure, true color rendering and autofocus are also very good. Against the best competition, the video is a little behind in the sharpness of the shot, but still above average. Within the video, you can skip the same way you do with still images (0.6 ×, 1 ×, 5 ×, 10 ×), but the quality decreases visibly for a larger zoom.
Conclusion
A mature universal with an emphasis on photography. The Huawei P30 Pro is an honest top-notch model that does not neglect any outfit. Of course the manufacturer had to think hard to refine the already well done Mate 20 Pro from last year, so he put most of the innovations on the camera. It has more faithful pictures during the day and can get even more light at night.

The equipment is larger and heavier
There is virtually no reserve for the equipment, except perhaps with the exception of a single mono speaker or a missing notification diode. The phone handles performance and lasts two days on a single charge. At the same time, thanks to very fast recharging, you almost never solve the remaining capacity of the battery – only a few minutes in the charger and the percentages grow in front of your eyes.

Sales box and package contents (Note: news package may vary)
We are also pleased with the work in progress to improve the EMUI environment, which is especially evident in details such as the Always on mode or the double tap on the activation. In case you need to expand the internal memory, get ready to buy expensive NM memory card. Even the price of the Huawei P30 Pro itself is not only popular and is starting to get closer to Samsung – the brand's biggest competitor. For the lower memory version (6 + 128 GB), you will pay 22 490 CZK, the upper variant (8 + 256 GB) will reach CZK 24990.
