Xiaomi Redmi S2 Review

Today, Wednesday, December 5, 2018, we witnessed the official arrival of Xiaomi's recognized Asians to Chile, offering some of their products, such as smartphones and home devices.

One of the smartphones with which Xiaomi arrives in our country is with Redmi S2, who will be the protagonist of this analysis, so that you can know in more detail what the manufacturer comes to conquer the Chilean market.

The Xiaomi Redmi S2 stands out by offering a 5.99-inch screen with HD + resolution and 18: 9 format, a dual rear camera of 12 + 5 megapixels, while for selfies we find a 16 MP flash with LED. Inside we have a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 with 3GB of RAM, operates with Android 8.1 Oreo customized by MIUI 9 and powered by a 3.080 mAh battery.

It is a mid-range smartphone that seeks to become a great alternative for this Christmas. We welcome our country and also thank our new Xiaomi Chile who gave us the Redmi S2 to bring you a full analysis that begins to follow.

Starting with one of the most important sections for many, I tell you that the Redmi S2 has a dual rear camera that integrates a 12 megapixel sensor with a f / 2.2 aperture, while the second sensor reaches 5 megapixels whose only function will be to calculate the depth that exists when taking a picture in portrait mode. All this is accompanied by an LED flash.

At the front we find a camera that achieves 16 megapixels of resolution and aperture f / 2.0 to have the best quality when we take our selfies. And if we do not have enough light, the device incorporates its own front LED flash.

When opening the camera application, we will find an interface that is very easy to use and with shortcuts to the main functions offered. For example, just by sliding, we can switch to photo, picture, video, panoramic, manual, among others, as well as enable flash, HDR, color effects, activate the front camera … etc.

All of the above, you will be able to know in the demonstration that I will leave you next:

The photographic quality as always is good when there are good lighting conditions, there the camera behaves very well offering a very good quality in the images. However the thing changes when the external light is low, there the camera tends to take slightly blurred photos, so try to have good lighting or use the built-in LED flash for a better result.

The following photos were captured with the Redmi S2 under different lighting conditions so you can enjoy the photographic quality and thus draw your own conclusions:

If we want to make a video with our protagonist, I tell you that the Redmi S2 has the ability to record videos in Full HD quality at 30 frames per second as the highest quality available, just as you can record in slow and fast motion. The camera does not have optical stabilization, but still offers the option that will work through software and is activated by default.

I leave you with the following test video that was recorded in Full HD quality at 30 frames per second. Keep in mind that YouTube slightly lessens the original quality of the video.

The Xiaomi Redmi S2 comes from the factory with the Google operating system we know as Android version 8.1 Oreo and customized with the customization layer MIUI 9.6, waiting for the update to MIUI 10.

The performance presented by the team is quite good, the vast majority of the use is fast, although occasionally we find some delay, but this clearly depends on the application we are running. Inside we find a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor with eight cores that is accompanied by 3GB of RAM.

Although MIUI is a 100% modified interface that has virtually nothing of the original interface of Android, I have redeemed the customization that allows you to apply, since you can change the icons, the type of animation, the style of the letters … etc. as well as being a very unique interface having its own identity, offering functions like "Dual Apps" to have two applications (what you want) running at the same time.

The MIUI launcher does not have the traditional application drawer, as all the applications and games you install will find them on the same home screen as the widgets for easy access and use.

No doubt, there is a lot to talk about MIUI, so I'll leave you with the following demo video so you can get acquainted with the impressive interface that the Xiaomi Redmi S2 offers us, as well as appreciate its performance when moving through the menus and applications.

As a security method, we will find a fingerprint reader located at the back of the computer, whose location is in the right place.

According to my own experience, the reader works very well, it is quick to recognize our fingerprint and also is to unlock the computer and at the time I was using I had no problems of recognition and / or errors with the reader.

For now, it would be the only locking method on the device – not to mention traditional security codes and standards – since we do not have a face unlock, although the possibility of including this method in future updates is not discarded.

As for the Android security patch, our protagonist loads the version corresponding to the month of September of the year 2018, so in this section, we are a little behind.

As for the battery I can tell you that the Xiaomi Redmi S2 incorporates a capacity of 3,080 mAh, which at least for this equipment and its hardware is more than enough, as you can see below.

Obviously I was testing the equipment as if it were mine, so I leave the details:

  • Applications usedCheat, Net Monitor Lite, Entel App, Signal, Swarm, Net Monitor Lite, Twitter, YouTube, Apple TV, YouTube, , VTR Play, Camera App, among others.
  • Bluetooth Devices: Sony WF-SP700N
  • Brightness of the screen: Automatic
  • Active mobile network: Entel 4G
  • GPS Status: High precision

TOTAL USE: 21 hours, 37 minutes
ACTIVE SCREEN: 7 hours, 5 minutes

Our protagonist incorporates a charger that is originally from Xiaomi and is oriented to the US market. However, it has an adapter that adapts it to the standard used in our country, in addition to being certified by the SEC.

Using this charger to charge our Redmi S2 completely, the charge took 2 hours and 10 minutes to complete (timed time), as shown in the following image:

The Xiaomi Redmi S2 has an IPS LCD screen that reaches 5.99 inches and has a HD + resolution, that is, 1440 × 720 pixels and a ratio of 18: 9 to adapt to current trends.

The quality of the image at first sight turns out to be very good, a quality that is expected from an IPS LCD. It has a high level of brightness because when we raise the brightness level to the maximum, the screen becomes very bright, which, in turn, helps to stay well in broad daylight.

The colors are vivid but not on a level that looks great. The screen setting is acceptable, but in the same way, I think we should now use full HD resolution screens, although in the case of Redmi S2 I do not complain.

Among the options that you have available to the screen, you will find the possibility to adjust the brightness and activate the option so that it adjusts automatically. You can also activate the reading mode, modify the contrast and colors (hot, cold or normal), as well as adjust the text size, among other options.

To the delight of many, the staff keeps their 3.5mm jack intact to plug in our wired hearing aids, and they will have to be what we got because the equipment does not come with its own headphones. Personally I used my Xiaomi Piston 2 headphones with which I had an excellent experience with some powerful bass and also high, all accompanied by a high power in volume, because unlike other androids, the volume is not limited by the software .

And if you want to improve the audio a little more, it also has an equalizer with 10 pre-equalized profiles or you can customize the 7 bands that it integrates, best of all is that you can use the equalizer as you want without sacrificing power volume You can also choose the type of headset you are using for a more optimized experience.

In this opportunity, we will have only one main speaker located at the bottom of the equipment. Its sound quality is very acceptable, has notorious serious and also sounds quite loud. The good thing is that, when it reaches its maximum level, the speaker does not get saturated, which is why it is appreciated.

For those who listen to your favorite shows from your local radio station, I told them that here we will find an FM radio tuner. I have to say that the signal reception is very good, although the latter clearly depends on the type of hearing aid you use and its location.

The tuner does not have RDS technology for additional information about the station, but you have the possibility to make recordings directly to record our favorite programs or music.

The Xiaomi Redmi S2 has a very normal design, obviously noting that we will not find a glass body and bright colors, because we will have a front where we will only see your screen, headphone, front camera and sensors, while the rear we see your camera and fingerprint reader.

The back, at first glance, seems to be a metallic device, but make no mistake, because it is plastic, though it is pleasant to the touch, but this will be determined over time. Being plastic is a bit slippery on some occasions but this is solved with the silicone cover that comes with the equipment.

The equipment has a size according to the current realities, so if you are not accustomed to today's trends, you will find the equipment a bit large as they are almost 6 inches. However, as the days go by you will get used to it. In my case, I had no problem holding it in my hand or carrying it in my pockets.

The dimensions of the equipment are: 160.7 x 77.3 x 8.1 mm, while the weight reaches 170 grams. As you can see, it is not a heavy smartphone, so I insist that you will find it comfortable to use. In conclusion is a simple design, which is not flashy … I mean it does not shout "look I'm an iPhone or a Samsung Galaxy", which some will like and others will not, I let your decision.

I must admit that I am very happy with the official arrival of Xiaomi in Chile, no doubt that was a big absentee in this important market and for those who are fans of the brand, there was no other way but to appeal to importers, the same thing happened to us. We had to take the equipment with them to do a review.

But today I'm happy because I can finally say, "I did a review of a team that I borrowed from Xiaomi." And I am happy to start reviewing the Redmi S2, a good mid-range smartphone with which the Asian manufacturer will seek to win over the area of users who do not yet know the brand, because it is a very good candidate to accomplish this difficult task.

The Xiaomi Redmi S2 has great features to compete with rivals such as Nokia and Huawei that were already present in Chile. Starting with a good screen in 18: 9 format which is the current trend and has no notch, something that many will love. It has dual rear camera that has an acceptable quality, but its strong point is in the selfies with its front camera of 16 megapixels with LED flash that takes photos with very good quality.

Although your internal hardware is not the latest of all, it still delivers completely acceptable performance, running almost anything without delays. Sometimes it gets a bit slow (as you can see in the demo video), but hopefully with the arrival of MIUI 10 it will improve. I liked the sound quality offered through headphones, I really enjoyed it.

The battery life I found remarkable, especially if we see that it is a capacity of 3,080 mAh and was still able to give me 7 hours of screen, it talks wonders of optimization that has its hardware and MIUI 9.6, which is greatly appreciated

MIUI is a personalization layer that I personally like, but what I do not like is that from time to time we come across advertising. It happened to me with the proprietary music app, where I was going through the list of songs and a banner was coming out, or when I started playing a song and where it is expected to see the album cover meets the tremendous publicity. I know that all of this can be turned off – and we know this because we are knowledgeable users on the subject – but what will happen to that person who does not have enough knowledge on the subject? Will you have to live with constant advertising on your smartphone? This has to change because you are paying for the equipment, they did not give it to you for free in exchange for advertising.

In summary, the Redmi S2 is a complete device that offers everything that is expected within the segment of smartphones, is compatible with all Chilean networks and its price does not exceed CLP $ 170,000. I recommend to all those who are looking for a device to listen to their favorite songs with the best sound, take some photos, get in touch with their social networks, watch videos … etc, but without paying a high sum in money, nor have memory problems.

I insist that Xiaomi Chile arrived with a good battle of soldiers and that the Redmi S2 is a great alternative to give at Christmas.

The Xiaomi Redmi S2 is now available through the official website of Xiaomi Chile as well as through the Movistar operator and retail stores. Its price is $ 169,990 for the 3 GB version of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage. It will be available in Black and Gold colors.

Thank you again to Xiaomi Chile for providing this unit and therefore brought you this complete review of Redmi S2.
