Chile is one of the countries with the highest prevalence of diabetes in South America, adding one and a half million people to it. The diabetologist and endocrinologist of the Ciudad del Mar Clinic, Dr. Berta Garrido, says that these specific signs can help detect it in time. "If these symptoms occur, it may be a pre-diabetes, so you have to perform a glucose tolerance test with an insulin curve," says the specialist.

"This problem is also associated with smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, so it is advisable to avoid them," adds the endocrinologist about this disease, which to avoid that it is necessary that people have a healthy diet, based on vegetables and some fruits, reduced sugars, fats and salt, who perform daily exercises for at least 30 minutes and avoid excessive consumption of drugs such as alcohol and cigarettes. "

In this line, the specialist explains that diabetes mellitus can cause other serious problems such as stroke, blindness, heart attacks, kidney disease and limb amputation, which in the last decade increased by 28%. .

Types of diabetes

  • Diabetes Mellitus Type 1: It is an autoimmune disease that destroys insulin-producing cells in the pancreas and usually occurs in children and young people, although in some cases it is possible that it develops into adulthood. It affects between 3 and 5% of people with diabetes.
  • Diabetes Mellitus type 2: It is a combination of insulin resistance and insulin deficiency that usually occurs in adulthood, related to obesity, physical inactivity and unhealthy eating. About 95% of the world's diabetes cases correspond to this type.
  • Gestational diabetes: It corresponds to the glucose intolerance that occurs during pregnancy and affects at least one in 25 pregnancies around the world.
