The photo taken by Osiris-REx showing how Earth looks 112 million kilometers The trade | Technology and Science | Science

"La Canica Azul" is probably one of the photographs of the Earth more recognized, this image taken in 1972 by the crew of the Apollo 17 mission, the same that took the last astronauts who landed on the moon. In this image, you can clearly identify our planet. Today, almost 50 years later, a probe sent an image of Earth taken 112 million kilometers away.

In the photograph that captured the probe Osiris-REx you can see the Earth as a small point of light in the lower left area of the image, next to it is a smaller point corresponding to the Moon orbiting our planet.

The other bright spot seen in the photograph, in the right area, is precisely the asteroid Bennu that the probe plans to study in the coming months. Due to its proximity, at the time of taking the image was only 43 km, the space rock is overexposed.

The mission of the Osiris-REx is to orbit Bennu until it analyzes the best point to land on its surface and collect physical samples of its composition to return to Earth and thus bring, for the first time, a part of this celestial body.
