The Health Department of València, General Hospital, presented on Tuesday the route of care for type 2 diabetes so that all professionals work in a coordinated way and following the same protocols established for the treatment of these patients.

The team responsible for creating the route explained how the implementation process will be implemented, which will begin to be implemented in six health centers in the department, then be extended to the rest, and how it will work from its start-up, informed the Generalitat in a statement.

The managing director of the General Hospital department, Enrique Ortega, explained that at the moment they are "in the stage of presentation, validation and implementation of this work tool that will benefit patients, professionals and the health system." "The route will begin to be developed in the form of a pilot project, and this year will be extended to all our health centers," he added. This path will ensure that each act related to the care of this pathology is encompassed in a common and coordinated way, with the objective of achieving the best possible care, with the maximum level of scientific evidence and seeking the best quality of life for the patient.

The head of the Department of Endocrinology and Nutrition at General Hospital Carlos Sanchez said that his department counted more than 33,000 patients with type 2 diabetes in 2018. "The problem is that in many cases, this disease goes unnoticed and if we to the prevalence data of our environment (approximately 13.8% of the adult population), we would have almost 20 thousand people who do not know they are diabetic, "he said.

From there, he continued, "the importance of early detection to try to control a disease that may go unnoticed, but can cause complications if not diagnosed early."

The primary care physician Carlos Borrás explained that working in a coordinated way will always be a benefit for patients and professionals, because the clinical approach is improved, duplications are avoided, we know what each of the professionals does, more pleasant work environments Are generated and the information is shared and organized.

The Assistant Medical Director of Primary Care, José Luis Gonzálvez, and the Assistant Director of Primary Care Nursing, José Manuel Giménez, added that, in defining the functions of professionals in each of the processes of attending to these patients, different evolutionary moments of the disease and the continuity of care will be favored.

The development of the type 2 diabetes treatment pathway of the Department of General Hospital de València began in early 2017 based on the idea of ​​& 39; care routes & # 39; which aims to establish, in highly prevalent chronic diseases, a new model of patient-centered care

The course was coordinated by the Directorate of Primary Care and involved primary care physicians, endocrinologists, nurses, social workers, specialists in clinical analysis, pharmacy, nephrologists, ophthalmologists, vascular and computer surgery, among others.

For its creation, meetings of more than 40 professionals of the department were organized in 5 working groups, which addressed the various situations that cover the care of people with diabetes 2, from basic care to the hospitalized patient and the various circumstances. which can occur in a chronic disease like this.
