The combination of chemotherapy with immunotherapy, a new treatment in Mexico against lung cancer, increases the life expectancy in patients with this condition, said Omar Macedo Pérez, an oncologist at the Tórax Clinic of the National Cancer Institute (INCAN).

When treating patients with lung cancer Under this clinical protocol, "a sustained benefit can be achieved, which means that the disease is controlled for years."

In an interview with Notimex, he pointed out that it has 50 percent of life expectancy in patients.

He warned that lung cancer represents a global health problem caused not only by smoking but also by chronic exposure to smoke from firewood and other pollutants.. "All over the world, it's on 85 percent to smoking, however, in Mexico the numbers are different, we have a 55 percent related to smoking and a 45 percent respond to other causes"

He regretted it in Mexico almost 80 percent of lung cancer is diagnosed in advanced stages, which means that the patient is not a candidate for surgical treatment.

We have to provide a treatment that controls the disease, which improves the symptoms and makes the patients live longer, "he said.

Currently, he said, we have three strategies to tackle lung cancer: the traditional, which is chemotherapy; therapies in whitewhere they are used medicines or other substances identify and combat specific types of cancer cells that cause less damage to normal cells, and more recent ones in which chemotherapy is combined with immunotherapy.

The treatment changes depending on a test that is applied to the patient who is called molecular profile, which consists of detecting very specific mutations, such as EGFR, ALK; when they are detected, white therapy – a type of treatment, in which drugs or other substances are used to identify and fight specific types of cancer cells, and which cause less damage to normal cells, ie a therapy that blocks these mutations.

If the patient does not have these mutations, which come to present one in four, the next parameter that we analyze is called TDL1; He directs us to see what treatment we will apply if we are to do immunotherapy or if we are going to give him a combination of chemotherapy with immunotherapy.

To understand this last treatment, it is important to note that for more than a month, James P. Allison and Tasuku Honjo won the 2018 Nobel Prize for Medicine, for his discovery of cancer therapy by regulating the immune system.

His work was instrumental in demonstrating the real potential of Immunotherapy as a treatment against cancerand a starting point for the development of new clinical trials in patients.

What they have discovered is precisely how he defends himself from the cells of the immune system and thanks to his discovery, drugs called immunotherapies were designed, which precisely attack these cancer defense mechanisms. The immune system comes into play to attack tumor cells. This is exactly what immunotherapy currently consists of, "explained Macedo Pérez.

In Mexico, immunotherapy is approved for patients with lung cancer. In INCan they are taken care of 400 new lung cases every yearand corresponding clinical protocols are applied to determine the type of treatment.

The risk factors, said the expert, in addition to smoking, are chronic exposure to wood smoke, environmental pollution and chronic lung infections, so it is recommended that before a persistent cough that lasts four or more weeks, it is mandatory to go with a pulmonologist to do studies on the lungs.

In addition, if the patient has a persistent chest pain, cough with bloody sputum, these are symptoms that make you think you have a disease and require an evaluation by a pulmonologist or general practitioner.
