Mercedes-Benz guarantees its strategy to manufacture millions of electric cars and plug-ins

Very soon there will be only one possibility to buy a new smart, that of acquiring a smart smart. Mercedes-Benz has yet to propose such an ambitious strategy, but it does include some kind of electrification across all its product lines. In 2022, it is expected that Mercedes-Benz will have 130 versions of its cars with some kind of electrification and therefore electric motors and batteries. So for a brand like this, and for a group as important as Daimler, it is essential to secure its strategy to manufacture millions of electric cars in the coming years.

Daimler has just announced that it has acquired € 20 billion of battery cells. These cells will be used, as we have said, in different electrification solutions, from hybrids and micro-hybrids to plug-in and electric hybrids.

Batteries to produce millions of electric cars and plug-in

It is difficult to estimate the number of cars that could be manufactured with this battery supply, especially if we do not know the cost of the cells per kWh, and the cars that will fit these batteries have so many different technologies. But it seems to estimate a cost between $ 100 / kWh – Tesla expects that Model 3 batteries will become even cheaper in the short term – and $ 200 / kWh, It could be said that Mercedes-Benz would have guaranteed the supply of batteries for hundreds of thousands of electric cars such as the Mercedes EQC and millions of small electric cars such as smart cars and plug-in hybrids.

Mercedes-Benz ensures the supply of batteries for millions of plug-in cars, by 2030

According to Mercedes-Benz, this acquisition aims to cover the supply of car batteries with different electrification technologies by 2030.

Only in the production and assembly of batteries, Mercedes-Benz will invest more than 1,000 million euros. The cells they would have purchased will be assembled in eight different plants on three continents, starting with Kamenz in Germany, where the batteries are already being manufactured, and another that will begin production in early 2019. Mercedes-Benz will also assemble batteries in Stuttgart, Sindelfingen and Beijing (China), Bangkok (Thailand) and Tuscaloosa (United States). The brand highlights the importance of locally assembled batteries and factories in Europe, Asia and the United States to maximize production flexibility and efficiency, an important factor in products such as electric cars that require a very large investment. and where the margins to pay off this investment are small.
