With a technical data sheet adjusted to the main parameters for what we already have in the market, it is the design and the multimedia point which gives differential value to the LG V40 ThinQ. Especially remarkable is the camera. On the one hand we have the addition of dual front camera or selfies, element that for a certain sector of the market is of capital importance. Now we have a second wide-angle lens for when we think it is convenient to use it.

Design, screen, sound and of course the set of five cameras are the arguments to rely on the LG V40 as a phone to enjoy daily

On the side of the rear camera there are also news besides the improvement of the size of the first sensor. The second sensor that covers the role of a wide-angle camera is no longer alone because it is accompanied by a third party that allows you to have a Zoom of two enlargements.

LG DNA in design: good news

The one that was standard doorman and pioneer in the design of the front with the maximum of space for the screen offers in this LG V40 a masterpiece in the level of design. Lightness, high quality finish and even water and dust resistance with the IP68 profile is the basis of a design that looks great on the hand.

The LG V40 does not face a revolution to achieve exceptional design, but clings to an idea that has been perfected. We have a glass back with an aluminum frame, but where the finish that LG called Silky Blast has a different feel. The special engraving in tempered glass Frosted appearance maintaining a certain level of brightness.

Lg V40 Thinq 5 There may be users for whom the camera module does not convince them, but the design of the LG V40 is the best of all

The result we love because keeps the back very clean from fingerprints and dirt, assuming different and mutable tones depending on the light. But it's also that the LG V40 ThinQ gains a lot of grip with this finish, making it one of the nearly 6.5-inch phablets that it feels most comfortable handling.

LG has achieved a comfortable design for its lightness and thickness, while attractive by the special finish of its treated glass

For this great feeling in hand helps light weight (less than 170 grams) and reduced thickness, in addition to not being a terminal especially elongated by the work and grace of a good reduction of frames that also makes when the screen is off we are with a rather symmetrical front.

The back has its own personality thanks to the camera module with three lenses. Interestingly, the flash, which is not two-tone, is relegated out of this module, which is strange. The good news is that the situation of this camera module is ideal: it does not stand out from the design, it is not near the edges and also maintains distances with the fingerprint sensor.

Lg V40 Thinq 14

This fingerprint sensor is consolidated at the operational level as a quick and simple way to identify yourself on the LG V40. It is very fast to register fingerprints and instant recognition and let us access the system. Just place your finger on the sensor (without having to have the active screen) to be identified and receive a very subtle but appreciable haptic response from the sensor itself.

There is also facial recognition in this LG V40. It works with the front camera and admits that it recognizes us with the screen off or we may require the slide of the finger on the screen after the recognition of our face. If we compare facial recognition performance with fingerprint performance, we are clearly in the second. Except in very controlled and sufficient light conditions, the identification of our face did not convince us.

Like other systems that rely solely on the use of cameras, there is an option in the settings to prevent system cheating, but this slows down recognition. And we can register more than one "version" of our face using different lighting, with or without beard, glasses, etc.

Lg V40 Thinq 13

In physical connections, we find a unique button to invoke the Google Assistant directly. You can remove this feature from the corresponding menu of the phone's configuration, but as we always say, having left the option to stun that button with another more usual function would have been appreciated.

This button is the most accessible of all, and you are always ready to press when you pick up the terminal. But there is no danger of unintentionally activating it thanks to its good construction and route.

The start is located on the opposite side, to the right, and something to our liking. On that same side we have the removable tray of the nanoSIM card and the microSD. If we prefer, this second zone of the tray can be occupied by a second nanoSIM, now the LG V40 ready at the software level to efficiently manage this second mobile line in the phone.

Lg V40 Thinq 2

Finally, we should talk about what the lower frame of the LG V40 offers us. There we have proliferation of very important elements. There is, of course, the USB-C port to charge, but the most important is the headphone output (despite the thinness of the phone) and the main speaker. They are two elements that, as we will see in the section on sound, are important and relevant to the multimedia experience with this LG V40.

Very precise and customizable OLED

LG decided not to marry any technology at the panel level of its screens and the new technology LG V40 OLED returns, as it did in the LG V30. Between us we had an LG G7 with IPS technology.

The screen of the LG V40 has a diagonal 6.4 inches without just molding and with a notch something to diet but without reaching the levels of minimalism we see increasingly in the mobile phone market.

The OLED panel of the LG V40 is of a very high level, offering a more natural saturation, surprising for its spectacular

At the consumer level, the overall quality of the OLED screen of the LG V40 has no objection. The contrast is excellent, offers a high level of brightness, very good viewing angles and the view is a screen that is vibrant and spectacular. It looks great in both indoor and outdoor environments with a reliable, fast auto brightness adjustment.

Lg V40 Thinq 9

The maximum resolution is 3120×1440 pixels, but we can adjust it to a value of 2340×1080 or even to 1560×720 pixels. Good density is guaranteed.

The panel of the LG V40 allows you to change the color of the screen in a wide way. Another six others are added to the automatic mode we like. And within them we can touch the color temperature and RGB levels. One of the most complete customizations in the industry.

Modes of use of the screen

The screen of the LG V40 includes precise and pleasant haptic response technology. Accessing submenus does not require very strong ringtones, and the experience is very satisfying.

I really liked the touch sensitivity that is the screen. I was able to enjoy it while using the keyboard or to adjust the menu options. It's very difficult to lose touch. Or, for example, activating and deactivating the double-touch screen can be performed in the most gentle way I remember in a phone, without involving accidental touches.

The front of the LG V40 ThinkQ is almost everything to the dashboard. At least in full-screen mode, something we can do if we remove the Android virtual buttons. We can do this by double-tapping the element to the left of the bar, and can return later by simply sliding up.

Lg V40 Thinq 11

These home touch buttons can be customized. It's our choice of bar background color and button combination, including a handy button to display the notification bar and also one to swap the SIM when we use the two available in this version of the LG V40.

The notch, which LG calls "new second screen," admits a bit of customization. We can leave it as it comes by default or apply a number of modifications ranging from more or less pronounced corners to applications, to fill the notch with not only smooth black but with different gray and even colored patterns.

Notch and always display

In the LG V40 there is no lack of Always on, with manual or programmed selection mode. Among its options, we have six screen styles and the possibility to access utilities and the music player simply by sliding over the row of icons in the Always on screen. This mode is recommended if you want to manage, for example, direct camera access, connectivity, flashlight, or sound profiles.

Earphone port and high-level sound

You can count on the fingers of one hand (or even less) the terminals on the market that really make a difference in sound level. The LG V40 is one of them, and in fact, the previous generation of this phone remained the best high-end sound terminal in our demanding comparison.

To begin, the LG V40 does not bypass the headset port 3.5 mm, despite its thinness. That we have this port available is something already very strange in the high range of large manufacturers. But do not think of this feature as what makes the LG V40 the strangest of the market, but as the key element that adds value to those who consider sound in a very important cell phone.

The audio setting of the LG V40 is set by the Quad DAC Hi-Fi 32-bit which is activated when the headphones are connected. We have at our disposal an equalizer with 14 preset modes, DTS: X surround sound (the Dolby Atmos competition) and a preset of four 5 sound modes.

In the box of the series model that we tried we found some good headphones with cord of cloth braided, comfortable and of great sound.

Lg V40 Sound Settings

But if we do not want to use wired or wireless headphones, the LG V40's speakers will be very satisfying. Are many powerful, defined and with good seriousness. Too bad they are not stereo and we only have a lower output that we are in danger of covering if we are not careful when picking up the terminal.

Energy surplus (beyond numbers)

The fact that a next-generation smartphone hits the market in late January has a high risk when it comes to a number of performance-by-number comparison. In a few weeks the Snapdragon 845 that moves this LG V40 will be overcome by the new versions. It is the law of life and the market.

Perhaps on a media level, that in a few weeks, within the MWC, we see the first terminals with the new generation of the most powerful processor from Qualcomm can harm this LG model. Or even overshadow a possible new terminal of the company itself.

Lg V40 Thinq 15

But if we focus only on the performance of the LG V40, there is no excuse not to choose it at this time. The LG V40 has 6 GB of RAM which give enough packaging for any task we require. Interface and applications of all types or multitasking move with absolute fluidity on the screen of this high-end Korean.

As internal storage capacity, we find the options of 64 or 128 GB, which can also be expanded with microSD cards if in DualSIM versions you do not use this second line possibility.

In our case, the test unit was 128 GB DualSIM, which puts you in a very good position against the competition.

No Android Pie in 2019

The LG V40 that arrives today in the European market does this without the latest version of Android. The drive we tested last week Android 8.1 series, and although it is expected that the update can be installed soon, for now it is not so. And it's bad news, not because Android 9 can contribute more than the current version, but because of the confidence that new versions will arrive in time in the future.

The interface stays clean without achieving the simplicity of a pure Android, very customizable and with peculiarities in both the configuration menus and the notifications management.

Lg V40 Thinq 7

We have available two modes of work (with tables in a row where apps are accumulated or apps box), floating bar with apps that drag on the side and a good deal of LG applications that no longer duplicate while Google, but still quite a lot.

To highlight those who help manage the phone as a Smart Doctor or specific ones to get more out of the games (graphics, rest time or game mode to avoid notifications or alerts) or double SIM.

Battery to be charged fast

Having a body of dimensions so small for the screen size offered, the battery of the LG V40 could not stretch too much. In the end, they were 3300 mAh which, due to the good overall optimization of the terminal and its main components, allows us to cover a solvency working day.

From a large smartphone, not only expect huge screen size but also an above-average range. And this does not happen in this LG V40

In our tests and tests these days, using it as the main phone, both in professional and leisure tasks, we 14 hours of use with 5 hours of screen, correct numbers, but far from what is expected to find a terminal of these dimensions and that admits so much activity with it.

The LG V40 has charging wirelessly and also fast. With the charger that comes from the factory, we were able to take advantage, reaching 25% of load (of 1% and with the terminal on and connected) in just 17 minutes, 50% in 38 minutes and full charge in one hour and 50 minutes.

The five-camera: the reason for being the LG V40

With the exception of Huawei, no other manufacturer has come close to the versatility of LG's high-end models. Already we can say that it has surpassed with the zoom of the P20 Pro, but this Lg V40 responds properly with a photographic arsenal conformed by five cameras.

Lg V40 Thinq 4

Let's start walking down the back. There, the main sensor offers a resolution of 12 MP and has a opening f1.5, which on paper should be translated into photos with more light in dark scenes, in addition to being able to achieve scenes with very little depth of field. And it has stabilization, which clearly points to the camera with which, in theory, we should get the best picture quality in excellent terms.

Shallow depth of field The main sensor is by far the highest quality, and with its f1.5 allows you to take scenes with little depth of field in a natural and direct way

This sensor has photoreceptors with a size of 1.4 μm, which leads to the great improvement of the camera this year. This increase in sensor size while reducing its resolution allows us to capture more light, something that in some other situation may mean that burned areas appear if we do not take special care in managing the primary point of exposure.

The images are clear enough and with proper color management, but as we get closer, we appreciate some flaws and reduced detail. At night, quality loss is most appreciated, a situation that occurs precisely in scenes where there is enough light and the brightest sensor is not able to function properly with this snapshot.

Night image detail

The second camera is the one that offers a 107 degree wide angle (the normal is at 78 degrees), and with this we get 16 MP resolution pictures, the aperture being also considerable (f1.9). In scenes with good light we get well balanced images with a different and very interesting point of view.

Wide Angle

This camera, like the third one, has no stabilization, so in night scenes, the overall quality is reduced and it is not able to capture as much light or as reliably as when we do this with the main camera. In addition, LG processing leaves almost no detail as we approach.

Wide angle night The wide angle camera loses a lot of quality in night scenes, at least when we approach it to appreciate the details

Finally, as a novelty in LG smartphones, we have a third camera with a 12MP (f2.4) sensor that acts as 2x zoom (45 degrees). In this case, as in the case of the wide-angle camera, the size of the photoreceptors is no longer so impressive and remains at a discrete 1.0 μm.

The zoom is perfectly usable with good light, and it is wise to incorporate it because we can resort to it in many situations. Certainly not the sensor that is used for portrait mode, something we enjoy. We are therefore facing a camera with zoom, yes, but this only leaves us good results when there is sufficient light. Inside or at night he suffers a lot.

Zoom 2x Example Zoom 2X (right)

With this versatile camera setup, LG had a huge potential that could not be lost at the interface level. Let's meet

The essential in the LG V40, which for me is the passage between the three cameras, is fast and straight from the main screen. There are no lack of direct access modes, such as portrait or triple photo. However I do not like other secondary ones like Google Lens or AI Cam exist by default and there is, for example, one for manual mode or for dealing with the HDR without having to enter other menus.

Interfsz Cmaara

HDR mode is only one of the critics. Although in automatic mode the results are most successful, direct access to the interface is always useful.

Hdr Mode Since there is no direct access to the interface, the automatic HDR mode must always be kept active because in the vast majority of situations it is very successful

In the interface, I also save the shortcuts to change the resolution of videos and photos in the settings themselves.

One option that gives a lot of game is triple capture mode with which we can achieve with a single shot the three possible shots with the main camera. So we can choose what best suits what we are looking for, since the three shots are stored in the interface, as well as a short video that summarizes the resulting scene.

Triple shot One shot and we got the three possible photos with the main camera

It's a great idea (and logic), but not without improvement. To start shooting is not simultaneous, it takes a little from the first to the last. We must ensure the pulse or use a tripod (and a scene that can not contain moving elements that we want to "freeze" in the photo). Its actual usefulness is therefore somewhat decaffeinated, but for static scenes such as architecture or landscapes, it is an option I would like to have on this phone.

From these triple photos the more complicated it is to zoom 2X. The ideal would be to determine that frame (and focus, is the most complicated and critical) and produce the other two shots, but the shot is produced from the main camera, which adds a few more steps (and delays) to get the best results.

Portrait mode with lighting effects

There is no lack of a portrait level mode on the LG V40. As already indicated, the main sensor is responsible for it, which guarantees us more quality than all the others. Portrait mode is fairly accurate at the edges and gives good results, although we can not use it with objects.

V40 Portrait Mode Different Blur In portrait mode, we can choose different levels of blur. And they can be edited later

Within portrait mode we have options like studio light effects and others that, while curious, depending on the situation may be somewhat artificial.

Portrait Edit Mode

The biggest problem we encountered in recognition of faces. Portrait mode only works with people, but in my case the beard and sunglasses gave the system many problems to recognize me and to be able to apply the portrait mode and its effects.

Portraits of light effect The LG V40 includes different lighting and cropping effects on a flat background that are applicable in portrait mode

Until we get to five, we're missing two cameras on this LG V40. They are in the secondary chamber. If there are two is to be able to get a wide-angle selfie that gives our self-portrait contains more information about the environment or for those group selfies that may look very good.

By the way, the basic beauty mode makes a good bikini operation on the lower part of the face, as an instant weight loss. And this is enabled by default.

As for the video, we have a very good general quality and where the strong point is in the manual control and cinema mode that gives us a lot of space to be more creative. There is recording up to 4K and we can use the main camera and the wide-angle camera for the video, but not change from one to another.

LG V40, Xataka's View and Note

With some delay since its introduction, the LG V40 It is ready for the European landing. It will do this on the 3rd of February with a price of 999 euros (and gift from a 28MT49S-PZ monitor).

With this starting point, the LG V40 part in disadvantage in relation to the brands that in a few weeks will have news in Barcelona. But this is, along with the battery, the only major problem of a solid and solvent phone that, while we were doing the test, still did not have Android 9.

Lg V40 Thinq 6

LG accommodates your V40 in one of the best designs of the high range, especially in the finish and good handling in the hand. And also a highly creative and multimedia terminal, with quality OLED screen and the best sound of the market.

As for the camera, the addition of the 2X zoom returns LG to the the most versatile cameras. It is the camera that gives more possibilities and that can forgive the fact that it is not among the best in the market in global quality.
