O Gastroesophageal reflux problems can be complicated during holidays because of the excessive consumption of food and beverages, so it is essential to moderate, a specialist in Mexico City said today.

"Episodes of reflux often they are minimized and aggravated by excessive consumption of food and beverages during holidays that can sometimes have fatal results, "said Dr. Erik Rebolledo in a statement.

The gastroenterologist said it is estimated that about half of the Mexican adult population suffers from gastroesophageal reflux, a disease that can be complicated when bingeing foods and beverages occur.

"It is common to see in emergency services patients who come for abuse at dinners who cause reflux, indigestion, gastritis and raise glucose levels that cause decompensation in people," said Metropolitan Hospital specialist from the capital.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease, also known as GERD, is characterized by regurgitation of gastric juices from the stomach into the esophagus, which causes internal irritation and burning sensation in the throat and mouth.

The expert reminded that too much alcohol, spicy desserts and foods high in fat can complicate the symptoms of the disease.

He further detailed that a person can consume up to 3,000 calories a day during the Christmas party, which can cause problems like indigestion, gastritis, heartburn and elevated glucose levels.

Finally, Rebolledo said that on these Christmas holidays one should beware of food being eaten, controlling obesity, smoking and avoiding copious dinners to take advantage of those dates and not having to go to emergency services in excess. EFE
