GROUND OF 6,7 DEGREES COULD BE AN REPLICA OF THE 2015 EARTHQUAKE IN COQUIMBO

On Saturday night there was a 6.7 degrees in the Coquimbo region which, in the first instance, forced a preventive evacuation to the risk of a possible tsunami, which was eventually discarded.

Faced with this earthquake, which caused the death of at least two people, the director of National Seismological Center, Sergio Barrientos, he pointed out that this telluric movement could be a replica of the September 2015 earthquake that affected the same area.

"This 6.7-magnitude earthquake occurs at the northern end of the September 8, 2015 8.4-magnitude earthquake-rupture zone that affected the Talinay peninsula, south of Tongoy, to Los Vilos. It is part of the area that was stressed since 2015, "explained Barrientos Now News.

"It's hard to say at this point, but it could be categorized as a rather late replica. But that will only be known in the next 5 or 10 years, once we examine how it evolves and what happens in the future, " he added.

"These classifications or categorizations may change in the future. At the moment I can say that this tremor is part of the subduction process of the Nazca plate under the South American plate and that the rupture continues a little towards the north of the zone of 2015 ", concluded Barrientos.
