A 42-year-old man died today after playing in the Loa River trying to rescue a 10-year-old girl who is still missing after running into the river.
The information was confirmed by the mayor of Calama, Daniel Agusto, in 24 hours. "A girl fell into the river. Unfortunately, in the eagerness to save her, the father threw himself into the water and with this situation he lost his life," he said. Firefighters and the Gope Carabineros work on site to find the smallest.
The river had a product of flooding of the rains that were registered in the north of the country, in the middle of the winter of high plateau.
"Today and yesterday we have established the situation in the villages and the flow has really increased. In fact, today the flow was already present in the municipality of Calama, especially in the sectors that cross the river through the city," added Agusto.
Meanwhile, according to Onemi, in the commune of San Pedro de Atacama, 10 houses are reported with minor damage due to rain. According to information provided by the National Emergency Office of the Ministry of Interior, the yellow alert is kept for the Province of El Loa and the commune of Antofagasta.
