About 160,000 children can not read well when they go to second year

The Ministry of Education reported that about 158,000 children throughout the school system, on average, finish first and pass to second without an adequate level of reading for the age or, still, unable to read.

This makes it difficult to perform in Language and in any other field in which they need to read or understand a Mathematics problem, which later leads to poor reading comprehension.

Given this situation, Mineduc launched the Leo Primero program focused on this level of basic education.

"Since 2012, we have seen results stagnating in reading. If we do not do something radical, we will reach 2020 and we do not substantially improve the results. So we are doing a program focused on the first basic, basic first-person teacher training that we think will play a key role, with special funds, with special materials, with training in reading techniques, "said Education Minister Marcela Cubillos.

The Secretary of State indicated that "there are questions of methodology, issues of focus, material issues".

Concrete measures to be taken include increased textbooks for school libraries and libraries – by 2021, there are still 270 libraries across the country.

It is also added that each course will receive a set of texts and materials, pedagogical support and, in addition to the training of teachers, there will be a special fund to which schools can apply to implement strategies to stimulate reading among children in the first grade.

Meanwhile, Education 2020 policy maker Nicole Cisternas realized that "in grade four or eighth grade, the number of children who do not understand what they read is close to 50%."

"We believe there is a very central issue in teacher education, how we are working on reading with students, and how we incorporate families. It is difficult for a child to be motivated to read if no one reads at home. of national reading, but at the levels of public and school policy we think it is important to innovate, "he said.

The regions with the lowest levels of reading are Atacama, Valparaíso, La Araucanía and also the Metropolitan Region.
