A study determines the beneficial effect of dairy consumption in the face of problems of obesity and hypertension

A national study conducted by professionals from the Hospital Universitario Regional de Málaga and the Institute of Biomedical Research of Malaga (Ibima) showed that people who consume dairy products on a regular basis are less likely to suffer from diabetes and hypertension and therefore develop diseases associated.

Denominated as [email protected], this is a project conceived and promoted by the Center for Biomedical Research in the Diabetes Network (Ciberdem), in which researchers and health centers from all over Spain participated.

The director of the Clinical Management Unit of Endocrinology and Nutrition of the Regional Hospital of Malaga, Gabriel Olveira, who also coordinates the research group "Endocrinology and Nutrition, Obesity and Diabetes" of Ibima, points out that the initial objective of this study was to establish the prevalence of diabetes in Spain, "but also allowed us to study the prevalence of other risk factors, such as obesity, hypertension, sedentary lifestyle or diet."

The transversal phase of the study [email protected] was carried out between 2008 and 2010 and was attended by more than 5,000 volunteers from all over Spain over 18 years of age. The work was coordinated from Malaga by Dr. Gemma Rojo Martínez, leader of the group in Ciberdem and career researcher at the UGC of Endocrinology and Nutrition of the Regional Hospital of Malaga and Ibima. This, in addition, determined the incidence of diabetes in Spain with individuals included in the original study after eight years of follow-up.

"As a result of hypertension numbers – 39.9% – and obesity – 26.6% – in Spain, we think of the need to implement strategies to reduce their presence due to their predisposition to other pathologies related to chronic cardiovascular diseases, heart failure and cardiovascular death, "explained Gemma Rojo, adding that so far there were no studies linking the consumption of dairy products and the presence of these diseases.

This research allowed not only to highlight the association between dairy consumption and the best metabolic profile in the Spanish adult population, but also "to show that women consume more milk, cheese or yogurt than men, while taking dairy products as sugars as milkshakes or ice cream, "said the coordinator. Thus, he points out that in northern Spain is where more dairy products are consumed and which in the east of the country is where less.

"The results of this research point to the beneficial effect of the consumption of dairy products in the presence of hypertension and obesity, which could contribute to a better overall metabolic state and lower cardiovascular risk," he reiterated.


Dairy products are part of a healthy diet, provide proteins of high biological value, vitamin B12 and are the most important source of calcium in the diet. Yogurt and many varieties of cheeses have low levels of lactose, so would be indicated in people with lactose intolerance.

"Although the fats contained in dairy products are more saturated, their role in relation to their association with chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension and obesity, is currently under discussion," said Gabriel Olveira.

The results of this study, together with those conducted in other countries and also with prospective follow-ups, suggest that in a healthy population, the intake of two / four dairy rations falls within a healthy eating pattern, even if they are not skimmed . but they should be preferably non-sugary. For people with excess weight, obesity or lipid elevation, it would be recommended to take them in the semi-skimmed or skimmed version, he added.
