Yukon mother and 10-month-old daughter killed by a bear in the remote hut


RCMP and the Yukon Coroner's Service are investigating the death of a 10-month-old mother and her daughter.

Lawyer Valerie Theoret, 37, and her daughter Adele Roesholt were found dead on Monday by the child's father in a remote hut northeast of Mayo, near the border with the Northwest Territories.

Gjermund Roesholt was coming back from his trapline and as he got close to home, he was charged by a grizzly bear.

He shot and killed. When he reached the cabin, he found the bodies of his wife and son.

The coroner said it appears that the mother and the child went out for a walk when the incident occurred between 10 AM and 3 PM. on November 26.

The family had been trapped in the Lake Einarson area for the past three months.

Mayo RCMP, the RCMP Forensic Identification Section and the Yukon Government Environment Department are assisting the Yukon Coroner Service with this investigation.
