West Vancouver residents protest Line B – BC transit plans

Some residents of West Vancouver are against plans to expand the city's transportation service if it means losing two lanes of traffic and causing traffic problems on Marine Drive.

"I am not against the buses, I am not against TransLink, I am neither against line B," said Nigel Malkin, a small businessman in Ambleside.

He staged a protest in West Vancouver on Saturday against a plan proposed by TransLink to implement priority bus lanes in the city.

He and others fear between TransLink and the West Vancouver District, it's already done.

"Last week, members of TransLink and the District of West Vancouver came to an information session. They warned us that they were going to close down two lanes of traffic and turn them into bus lanes, "Malkin said.

"They went and told us point-blank, looking us in the eye, that there was absolutely nothing we could do about it."

Malkin said companies in Ambleside and Dundarave will suffer.

"Entrepreneurs are horrified and it's as simple as that. They are really worried, "he said.

On Friday, the West Vancouver District said on its Web site that it is still reviewing the proposed line B project with TransLink, and that no decision has yet been made.

Marine-B Line B would operate from Dundarave to Phibbs Exchange in North Vancouver. It is part of the TransLink Mayors Council's Vision for Transit and Transportation – one of four new fast shipping lines planned for Metro Vancouver in 2019.

Capilano University professor Michael Markwick said companies in Dundarave say they are suffering from the lack of a fast and efficient transportation service.

He says he can not come soon.

"Companies are having trouble staying open. One business actually had to close one day a week because of staffing issues, and this is directly related to the nightmare of traffic and the lack of mass transit, "said Markwick.

"These are not major urban engineering projects. These are very important adjustments to an existing system to allow people to move more easily. "

In an e-mail, TransLink said its own traffic modeling shows that traffic flows can be improved, saving time for drivers and transit users.

In addition, of the 766 parking spaces in Ambleside and Dundarave, only about 15 would be lost.
