Volvo's high-performance Polestar brand introduced the new Polestar 2 EV on Wednesday. The Polestar 2 is a compact electric sedan designed to rival the hot selling model 3 of Tesla.
"Polestar 2 is our first all-electric car and first-volume model," Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath said in a statement. "Everything was designed and developed with passion and dedication."
According to Ingenlath, Polestar 2 mass production is an important step in the company's quest to deliver environmentally-friendly, high-performance cars.
"As an electric performance brand, and through the upcoming launch of a portfolio of all-electric cars, Polestar is determined to meet the global challenges of air quality," he said. "Polestar offers electric performance cars that are great for driving and driving."
Volvo Car Group owns 50% of Polestar, while the Volvo Geely Group owns the other 50%.
Polestar 2 is expected to have a range of 275 miles on a single charge. Its pair of electric motors develops 408 hp of electricity from a 78 kWh LG Chem battery. (The Chinese market cars will receive a 72 kWh battery produced locally.)
Polestar 2 is built on Volvo's Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) platform.

According to the automaker, the Polestar 2 can reach 60 mph in less than five seconds.
The Polestar 2 is available with a performance package with extras added as Öhlins shock absorbers, Brembo brakes and 20-inch wheels.
The interior of the Polestar 2 features a vertically oriented 11-inch touch screen. It will be one of the first cars in the world to present an infotainment system with Android technology that offers features like Google Assistant and Google Maps.
Polestar 2 will go into production at the company's factory in Chengdu, China, in early 2020, both to the right and to the left.
The fully loaded Polestar 2 Launch Edition will start at $ 63,000 in the US. A federal tax incentive of $ 7,500 may reduce the price to $ 55,500.
A smaller version of Polestar 2 will be sold in Europe. However, there are no current plans to offer this variant in the US.
As with all Polestar models, Polestar 2 will only be available for sale online.
Polestar 2 will make its official debut in March at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show.
