Top 10 Game Tables: Spyro shoots for first place

Spyro Reignited Trilogy dislodged Red Dead Redemption II as the best-selling retail game in Australia last week, repeating a feat the game has already achieved in the UK.

The trilogy re-started by Spyro received generally positive reviews, although Activision has faced criticism for leaving most of the game out retail discs (most of the game is not on the disc and needs to be downloaded first, completely eliminating the benefit of buying a physical copy of the game in retail) and not adding subtitles.

The Spyro Reignited Trilogy has so far emulated the success of last year's Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy. The two compilations certainly seem to have worked well for Activision, which was not really involved in the production of the original PlayStation (Activision won the rights to Crash and Spyro in 2008 after its merger with Vivendi, which had already merged with the original ) Crash and Spyro Universal Interactive publisher in 2000). Re-mastered collections are good examples of hunger among certain fans for reinvigorated versions of previous favorites.

Second is Bethesda's Fallout 76, but things are not great for a long period on the charts. Fallout is a potent RPG brand and the game features an open world four times larger than Fallout 4, but the Fallout 76 pivot for an online multiplayer experience was greeted with a reaction it would describe as mixed. The IGN review called this an "experiment that went wrong."

The third and fourth positions are occupied by Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and come on, Eevee! These are the first Pokémon games for the Nintendo Switch and are based on 1998's Pokémon Yellow. If the sales of each were combined, it is possible that they mirror Spyro, but they were listed separately.

The remaining two new entries last week are Battlefield V and Hitman 2 in eighth and ninth, respectively. Despite the large number of new entries, this seems a bit low for a big brand like Battlefield, but it is worth remembering that Battlefield V had a particularly peculiar launching program (owners of certain editions of Battlefield V were able to buy and play well before its launch). "Official" release date of November 20) and is a series with a strong legacy of PC (most PC game sales are digital and digital sales on any platform are not reflected in these retail graphics).

It's good to see Hitman 2 enter the top 10, especially considering that the future seemed a bit bleak for this cult series after former publisher Square Enix decided not to continue its support for the franchise in 2017 by opting to sell rights back to developer IO Interactive.

A major concussion in this week's charts, and will likely continue to follow aggressive retail rebates in a lot of desirable, evergreen games over the weekend.
