Fossils revealed details of a small relative of frogs who lived at the same time as the dinosaurs 216 million years ago – the oldest known in North America.

"Data-reactid =" 23 "> Fossil bones are thought to be of one extinct branch of the frog family, Chinle frogs, and the late Triassic date, about 216 million years ago.

The name of the fossil derives from where they were found, the Formation Chinle of Arizona.

Michelle Stocker, an assistant professor of geosciences at the Virginia Tech School of Science, says the fossils, discovered in May 2018, underscore the importance of collecting microfossils.

Stocker says, "This new finding highlights how much more we still have to learn about the Upper Triassic ecosystem and how much we find when we look a little closer.

"We are familiar with the charismatic archosaurs of the Chinle Formation, but we know that, based on other ecosystems, they should form a small percentage of the animals that lived together.

"With this new focus, we can fill many of these smaller components with new discoveries."

Coming from several individuals, the hip bones are long and hollow, with a hip rather than centered fit.

The frog bones show how small they were: just a little over half an inch long.

"The Chinle toad could fit at the end of your finger," Stocker said.
