The legendary accordionist Ray Walsh is eliminated at age 75


One of the most acclaimed accordionists in the province died. Ray Walsh has been known for his traditional music for decades.

Born in Bay de Verde, he began playing in many dances and gatherings in the city. From 1964 to 1975, he was the featured artist on the television program All Around the Circle.

Walsh has contributed to many recordings and tours over the years, playing with a variety of Newfoundland musicians, including John White, Joan Morrissey and John Curran.

In 1995, he formed the Walsh Family Band with his son Greg, his daughter Michelle and his brother Gerard. Other family members were added and their last album release was in 2016, entitled Years May Come, Years May Go.

Walsh was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award during the Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Festival in 2013.

Walsh was 75 years old. The funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
