Detroit, MI – January 14, 2019 – Subaru Tecnica International (STI), a wholly owned subsidiary of Subaru Corporation, today introduced the limited edition STI S209, the first STI line product exclusively produced for the US market. As an S-line product, the STI S209 encompasses power, handling, aerodynamic and driver engagement upgrades, and
undergoes final assembly in Kiryu, Japan, where he receives modifications to the engine and changes to the bodywork that in total require him to be homologated to the US by STI; thus, the S209 is considered the first "built in STI" Subaru sold in the USA. The S209 carries a high-performance tradition dating back to models built with STIs that were unique to the Japanese domestic market – the 2000 S201 through 2018 S208. .
Designed with a focus on high-performance driving, the S209 is inspired by technology transfer from STI's most formidable track machine – the WRX STI Nürburgring Challenge, which won the SP3T class in the 24 hours of the Nürburgring in 2018, marking the fifth time in STI. the SP3T class in the grueling endurance race. The S209, like the Nürburgring Challenge race car, uses an expanded wide body outer treatment that extends the overall width of the vehicle to 72.4 inches, or 1.7 inches wider than a standard WRX STI. Bulged fenders accommodate wider front / rear rails (+ 0.6 in front / rear) and 265/35 Dunlop GT600A summer-only tires wrapped in 19×9-inch forged BBS alloy wheels. The all-new tires, developed exclusively for the S209 by Dunlop, contribute significantly to the tough top grip of the top car at 1.0 g. The openings in the front fenders provide additional cooling of the engine, while the openings in the rear fenders rectify the turbulence of the air to reduce drag. Brembo's brakes, with drilled steel rotors and 6-piston monobloc front calipers and 2-piston monobloc rear calipers, provide strong stopping power, thanks in part to improved high-friction pads that provide greater resistance to fading.
Underneath the wider body of the S209 are specially developed Bilstein® shock absorbers, hardened helical springs, a 20mm rear stabilizer bar and pillow type sleeves for the front / rear side links. The S209 incorporates reinforcements on the front and rear platforms and, around the Nürburgring race car, a flexible front tower bar and flexible front / rear. The flexible tower bar, unlike a conventional rigid bar, is divided and joined with a ball joint in the center to be longitudinally movable while helping to stiffen laterally the car body. The result is excellent tire grip during lateral moments, combined with proper driving during the longitudinal moments. Meanwhile, tensile stiffeners apply tension between the body and the cross member to optimize chassis flexion, improving cornering stability and providing better steering, handling and steering response. Another technology of Nürburgring race cars arriving at the S209: front, rear and side under spoilers; front bumper; and carbon fiber panel and rear wing.
A fully redesigned version of the legendary BOXER 2.5-liter EJ25 engine powers the S209. Featuring a STS turbocharger manufactured by HKS®, the EJ25 has approximately 341 horsepower, thanks in part to a larger turbine and compressor (up to 6 and 8 percent, respectively, compared to the WRX STI) and increased maximum pressure increase to 18.0 psi (16.2 psi for WRX STI). Proudly displaying an S209 serial number plate, the enhanced BOXER engine uses forged pistons and connecting rods that are lighter and stronger. The intermediate torque also receives a remarkable increase of 10 percent at 3,600 rpm, providing higher output speeds when driving on the track.
For the ultimate driver coupling, the S209 comes exclusively with a near-ratio 6-speed manual transmission distributing power to a full-time Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive System with limited front / rear slip differential (DCCD) ), Dynamic Torque Vectorization and Multi-Mode Vehicle Dynamics Control. A recalibrated SI-Drive system offers three modes: Intelligent (I) for better fuel economy and smoother power control; Sport (S) for optimum power balance between response and control; and Sport Sharp (S #) to achieve the best acceleration times. STI engineers recommend Sport over Sport Sharp for driving circuits, as the less aggressive acceleration map allows for greater driver control.
To power more air for the EJ25, the S209 uses a high-flow intake system with a new intake duct, induction box with a conical air filter, a silicone turbo input duct and a nod of the 2004-07 WRX STI, a water intercooler spray system that reduces the temperature of the intercooler through manually operated handwheel blades. More air demands more fuel, so the S209 gets a new high-flow fuel pump, larger fuel injectors and an STI-tuned engine control module. High-performance mufflers deliver 17% less airflow resistance and lose approximately 4.1 lbs. Finally, larger, hand-polished stainless steel exhaust tips – 101mm in diameter – provide an aggressive and acoustic look.
The S209 receives several adjustments to lift it from other STI sedans. An ITS emblem replaces the traditional cluster of Subaru stars in the center of the D-shaped steering wheel, which is wrapped in silver-stitched Ultrasuede®, a treatment that takes you to the lid of the central console storage box. An S209 serial number badge resides on the center console, and the S209 badges adorn the passenger side panel and the Recaro® front seat headrests, which feature new silver-colored inserts. From the outside, special S209 badges are affixed to the front grille and fenders as well as the rear decklid.
Only about 200 STI S209 units will be built, destined exclusively for the US. The available combinations of exterior color / BBS wheels will be Blue Pearl / Gray WR wheels and White / Gold White Pearl wheels. The price will be announced closer to the date of sale at the end of 2019.
