Children and staff of the affected classes, as well as their families and close home contacts, will receive the hepatitis A vaccine, the Ottawa District School Board Carleton confirmed Wednesday, referring additional questions to "subject matter experts." agency.

Hepatitis A is a contagious virus that affects the liver and can range from a mild illness that lasts a few weeks to a serious illness that lasts for months. There is no medication to treat hepatitis A, but vaccination can prevent the onset of symptoms if it is given within two weeks of exposure, the OPH said.

Hepatitis C is most commonly disseminated through sexual contact, needle sharing, a "contaminated food handler," improper hand washing after toilet use, contamination during food processing and by people traveling to common places, said the OPH.

The most common food sources are contaminated water, raw or undercooked crustaceans, and raw fruits and vegetables.

Symptoms, which develop between 15 and 50 days after exposure, include:

  • Fatigue
  • Jaundice
  • Dark urine and light stools
  • Abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, lack of appetite
  • Diarrhea
  • Fever
