People looking for bargains on previously appreciated goods can find them in the new store of used articles of Nanaimo Hospital Auxiliary.
The store has been in operation since November 5, but received its official opening on Wednesday with cake, coffee and door prizes for dozens of shoppers who attended the event.
The new store, like its predecessor, is located in Northridge Plaza, but is a larger retail space next to Quality Foods and is about 30 percent larger, allowing more room for merchandising and storing donations of clothing and household utensils from the community .
The store is made up of volunteers and a larger company requires more hands to operate it.
"We have no shortage of volunteers, thank God," said Phil Robling, Nanaimo Hospital Auxiliary president. "A lot of people like to work here. [because] it's a fun place to volunteer and because they're making a contribution to the hospital, that's all about who we are. "
The Nanaimo Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Store sales proceeds, the hospital lobby helper gift shop, annual lottery resources, and other ancillary functions increase most of the money the helper presents each year to support the General Hospital Regional of Nanaimo. At the last annual general meeting of Auxiliary Hospital, the organization presented a check for just over $ 474,000, raised by the 250 auxiliary volunteers.
An updated X-ray suite for the hospital is just one of the projects the hospital's hospice store is supporting.
"It's going to be next-generation, upgrading our X-ray suite with state-of-the-art equipment as well as some of the infrastructure that needs to happen," said Marci Ekland, director of NRGH's website. "Another great thing we hear in the hospital, I will say, daily is the fact that the helper supports our wifi, so all the costs of the wifi are actually picked up by the helpers, so when you look at the comfort of the patient it is something which patients really appreciate when they are arriving. "
The store is open Monday through Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm.
