NEWERK, NJ – Defensive midfielder Mirco Mueller of New Jersey had all range of motion and was aware after being pulled out of ice on a stretcher after a head fall on the final tables during the Devils game with Calgary tonight of Wednesday.

John Hynes, Devils coach, said after the game that Mueller sat in the locker room and knew what was happening before going to a hospital for evaluation.

"Thank God he's fine," Hynes said after the Devils' 2-1 loss. "He is fully conscious and all his extremities are moving well."

Mueller was headlining on the boards at a strange angle after going to the net of flames in a race. The Calgary striker, Michael Frolik, fell on him.

The teammates immediately asked the medical staff to step out onto the ice. The game was delayed about 10 minutes, while the 23-year-old Swiss player was attended by medical staff and coaches from both teams.

"You see guys being helped on the ice all the time, but I never liked that and it was new to me, and I really did not like it," said Devils goalkeeper Mackenzie Blackwood. "You try to change the focus, but in the back of your mind you expect your partner to be well."

Frolik said he fears the worst, until he said Mueller gave a positive signal when he was removed from the ice.

"When it happened, I thought," From my God, this is going to be very bad, "Frolik said. "I hit him and I saw his head first. It's difficult, but when he raises his finger, it's usually a good sign."

The fall came close to goalkeeper David Rittich of Flames, and it startled him.

"I do not even want to talk about it because when I saw his eyes, his mouth was open and blood came out," he said. "It was not a great feeling, I hope it's better and better in a little while, I do not want to imagine anymore."

Striker Blake Coleman said he has never heard the Prudential Center so quiet.

"You can even see on their faces, for Calgary, that they really cared," Coleman said. "No one wants to see a player fall that way. I've never played in a game when something like that happened."

Mueller has one goal and nine assists in 47 games this season.
