Man taken by helicopter to Calgary hospital after incident in the steel-making operation in B.C.

A man was taken by helicopter to Calgary's Foothills Medical Center on Monday after a workplace incident that initially led him to a hospital in Elkford, according to a STARS Air Ambulance spokesman.

The STARS said they had no details about the patient's condition but said the man was about 30 years old. They did not provide details about the incident at the workplace that led to their hospitalization.

Teck Resources Ltd. said the "serious incident" occurred at noon local time at a maintenance workshop contracted at Greenhills, which is a coal production operation.

In a statement sent to Global News, the company said the employee was a hired employee. He described the worker's wounds as "serious."

"We are focused on providing as much support as we can to the hired employee affected, his family and colleagues at this difficult time," said Teck Resources Ltd. "No other employee or contractor was injured, and there are no ongoing security or environmental risks.

"Competent authorities have been notified and an investigation into the incident will be conducted."

The company's Greenhills operation is located about five miles northeast of Elkford.
