SASKATOON – Police say a man died after a shootout with police officers in Saskatoon.
The Saskatoon Police Service says the RCMP responded to reports on Saturday night that a man with a gun was heading toward Saskatoon and was threatening to injure himself and the police.
They say Mounties deployed a tire-emptying device, which partially deactivated the vehicle in the southwest corner of the city, and that's where the Saskatoon officers arrived.
They say the man refused to obey officers and fired his gun, and the police returned fire.
The 27-year-old man, whose name was not disclosed, died in the hospital and no officer was injured.
Police say throughout the incident, the man contacted several people on the phone, including negotiators of the Saskatoon police crisis.
Police said the province's Ministry of Justice was contacted and a request for independent supervision was made.
