An unknown amount of heating oil that fell during a delivery accident went to the Ottawa River in Gatineau.
Staff were called to the rue Hôtel de Ville and Rue Laurier area on Friday afternoon.
Because of the conditions, it is not known how much oil actually got into the water, but the Quebec Environment Ministry estimates between 700 and 1,200 liters spilled.
A spokesman said booms had been dropped to limit the amount of oil that reached the river and that Gatineau's drinking water quality was "unlikely" to be affected.
