It was the 17th homicide of the city of the year.

In the middle of the night, about seven police cars were grouped around a section of the parking lot at the north end of the mall, between a CIBC bank and a Mucho Burrito restaurant.

The area was isolated with yellow tape, but the stores remained open and the shoppers were still busy.

A shopkeeper said he saw the police scouring the floor near the bench with lights, as if searching for shell shells.

However, shopkeepers near the scene said they saw nothing of the shooting. All the store windows faced east toward Bank Street, and it looked as though the shooting was just around the corner, out of sight.
